FReepers fretting over fact that Daily Show viewers are educated
Edited on Mon Sep-27-04 10:49 PM by feistydem
I was getting a chuckle out of the freepers back & forth over whether or not the Daily Show viewers are just "stoned slackers" --as Bill O'Reilly insisted when Jon Stewart went on "The Factor." The funnier part is that a study was done which indicates that Daily Show viewers comprise a larger percentage of college degreed viewers than other shows. Here are some clips and the article that set them all off their crazy rockers (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1228781/posts.

Knock yourselves out over the hilarity of it all:

"Who says a stoned slacker can't have a college degree? Or be a college professor for that matter?"

"'And guess whose audience is more educated?'
Now that O'Reilly has successfully alienated (nearly) the whole of his conservative audience, the answer is obvious."

"Somehow I just cannot and Will Not Believe that Daily Show Viewers are More Educated than Viewers of Fox News."

"Just an interesting side note...
... The only person I know who watches the Daily Show (and does so religiously) is my cousin. He just so happens to be a stoned slacker. (and a hopeless liberal)"

"'Viewers of Jon Stewart's show are more likely to have completed four years of college...' All five viewers."

Uh... will all 5 of you please count off?

On edit, I'll start... One (with a double major)

95. 'Fraid so.
Strange, isn't it, that I've got more in common with people here on DU that with the mainstream of my own party?

I would say that's because my viewpoints are to the left of standard republican values. But the real point is that the Republican party itself has shifted far right of those values. In my opinion the party should have disowned this Bush administration and elected an opposing candidate to run against Bush/Cheney and Kerry/Edwards. (Allthough, frankly, I've become a fan of Kerry.)

I've seen him interviewed on almost every medium imaginable. All hae asked him why his viewers get their news from the Daily Show instead of the majior media? That must be why even the freepers know him! All five of them little people made all this impact!!!

He said it last night: the intelligentsia that distributes these awards (note the stellar subject/verb agreement there) thinks he's too barbaric.

Guess I'm one of "that" intelligentsia...

(And no, I don't watch the Daily Show, but I would if I had cable)

Starting grad school in the spring. FUCK YOU FREEPERS!!!!!!

ON EDIT: I also have an A.S. in Avionic Systems Technology I earned while serving on active duty United States Air Force. I earned that and my B.S. at night, while I was also a supervisor over the F-15 C/D Microwaves Avionics Test Station area, as well as a full-time parent, and husband. I went to school on my lunch hour, at night, while deployed to Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia (again). I'd leave at 0600 in my uniform. I'd get home at 2330 most nights, do some homework, wake my daughter up just so I could have some time with her, then try to get about 3 hours of sleep. Then, I'd get up and defend you fucking freeper pieces of shit again the next morning. So, thank me for your freedom to be complete fucking pricks! Stick that in your warmongering (but non-volunteering) asses!

If anyone has the right to rant, it's you, and thank you for your service and for laying into them. They deserve it.

"WASHINGTON POST - You have to hand it to the Television Critics Association for naming Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" the year's best news and information program. That happened during the 20th annual TCA Awards ceremony over the weekend. We think Stewart was given the TCA Award because his Comedy Central show was the only one early on to ask the tough questions about the decision to invade Iraq."

There was an absolutely wonderful thread in the Lounge a few weeks ago (I apparently didn't save the link, dammit) -- asking DUers to check in with the topic or subject of their thesis. I'm tellin' you, we have some damned educated people here. My poor little B.S. with honors seemed mighty puny.

Hubby and I are college seniors working our way through school with no parental money whatsoever. He's one semester shy of a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, I'm one shy of a B.A./B.S. in psychology. Attempting to study while working enough to live and pay tuition leaves us no time to understand the meaning of the word "slacker."

Oh yeah, and neither of us have ever even shared a room with a joint, as we are asthmatic enough that it would probably kill us.

We are obsessed with TDS, however (and not just because I think Jon Stewart is hot). It's the only American news we watch, even if it is "fake news."

58. Cute story about the wife of The Bossman
Edited on Tue Sep-28-04 02:52 AM by VolcanoJen
The other day, she was musing about Kerry and Bush pulling near even in the polls, after being elated by Bush's sudden surge after the RNC.

"I think I have it figured out," she opined to me over wine one evening last week. "The Democrats that are being polled obviously don't work, so they're home to answer the phone when the pollster calls. Democrats don't have jobs, so they're at home! The pollsters only get answering machines when they call Republicans."

I laughed a bit and suggested to her, nicely and in a funny-ha-ha way since she's the boss' wife, that Democrats are the ones working two to three jobs with no health insurance, so maybe the polls are bullshit.

She laughed heartily and slurped her wine. No further news to report, but it seems as though she, too, might be suffering from Weird Freepy Distortion of Logic Unbecoming of An Otherwise Reasonably Intelligent Woman Disorder.

Hey, at least she has health care, and can fix it after the election. :-)

The Peabody is given for Excellence in Journalism. Jon Stewart won it for Indecision 2000. O'Really claims he got one while working for Hard Copy. Hard Copy got a Polk - a less prestigious award - after O'Really left the program.

Edited on Tue Sep-28-04 10:50 AM by nownow
Well, situationally -- bailed out on a BA in journalism during the Reagan years, sort of halfheartedly working on finishing now in some other field. I do get to say 'some college' when I fill out a form.

The Mr. slacked, but finally got his BS recently.

But we've both been working pretty much constantly for the past 20+ years, so I guess we don't really qualify as slackers, per se.

And like the other non-degreed posters in this thread, I may not have a degree, but I'm not stupid -- I've educated myself quite nicely, thank you, by not stuffing my head up my rectum the day I graduated from high school and refused ever to entertain another idea since I was 17 years old, unlike even the degreed Freepers out there. I don't mean for this to sound defensive toward the degreed posters in the thread, don't misunderstand -- I am a little embarrassed, as a National Merit Semifinalist years ago, that I didn't get through college when I started, though I'm glad I'm not a journalist in the current climate, you betcha!

Oh, yeah -- I'm sure there are some Freepers with bachelor's degrees. I'll bet every single one of them who has a bachelor's has a bachelor's in business management with an emphasis on organizational leadership.

Wouldn't know who to call to get dope -- haven't smoked any in a dozen years. Same for the Mr.

126. Stoned slacker checking in
Even though I've never touched the stuff in my entire life, EVER, I guess the fact that I watch Jon Stewart instead of Bill O'Lielly and Sean Spinsannity makes me a stoned slacker.

132. It is one of my favorite shows
I have an undergraduate degree and am working on my Master's and have been full-time gainfully employed since I was 14 years old and was allowed to work by my parents. I have never been fired and I have never quit a job without another one lined up. I find the Daily Show hilarious and a fun way to poke fun at the world we live in.

135. Some people with college degrees still can't think for themselves.
Freepers as a group tend not to do their homework and just take the word of their party leadership. They make up catchy phrases and spend their time just repeating them and don't even bother to find out whether true or false. They travel in packs and are ready to bully anyone who gets in the way of their agenda. Liberals (degreed or not) tend to know the facts and can speak fairly extensively about issues. They also I believe are more knowledgeable about who their representatives are and what they represent.

148. Slacker and educated all in one bundle
I was a straight slacker most of my life. Now I am a studious gal with high aspirations and a propensity for procrastination.
That said, many of my friends and family have not completed college, are wonderfully bright and sensitive, and are huge TDS fans. Hate to make this an issue of education, but oh well.

151. my girlfriend and i. she's a semester and a half from a PhD
i'm a semester from a masters, and then on to a PhD in pharmacology.

the thing about the daily show is... it's tongue in cheek, but it's accurate in the facts that it *does* present. it's also, in a sarcastic way, pretty dead on accurate in its outlook. it's not "liberally biased" so much as reality biased. and right now, the liberal outlook reflects reality far more accurately than that of your average conservative.

the more accurate a source is in getting at the truth, the more liberally biased it is. right now, the two are fairly in synch. at least, relative to the outlook of conservatives. bush *relies* on continued ignorance of a number of basic, demonstrable facts. if that ignorance didn't exist, he wouldn't be reelected. this isn't liberal bias, it's simply, and demonstrably true. unfortunately, you can't demonstrate that to the people without the apparatus to do it. the conservatives have the big bullhorn, and to hell with the truth.

155. Stoned slackers ?
My wife and I do not come from well off families and we got married early in life, JR. high sweethearts, and we have three school aged children. We have since worked very hard and have managed to get three degrees between us,my wife has a BS and I have two ADs,as soon as we finish paying off what is left of my wifes student loans I am going to pursue a BS in computer science. We get stoned and watch the daily show several times a week. Slackers? I think not.

158. Count me as one
I watch the Daily Show every day - 4 years college - work 40+ hours a week. I don't think I'm a stoned slacker.

Maybe my mom (by freeper definitions) was. She watched quite a bit of The Daily Show from her bed on medication during the last year of her life while enduring chemotherapy and fighting a battle with lung cancer. It was one of the things that helped her cope.

I didn't find out until last March when we were talking and she brought up how she felt about Bush and the Iraq war and she told me.

I miss you mom.O8)
