Nova Scotia legalizes gay marriage
Edited on Fri Sep-24-04 05:47 PM by plastic_turkeys
OTTAWA (Reuters) - Nova Scotia on Friday became the fifth of Canada's 10 provinces to allow gay couples to marry when the provincial supreme court ruled that banning same-sex unions was unconstitutional.

CBC television showed film of people inside the Halifax court applauding after Judge Heather Robertson announced her decision. Ottawa did not seek to challenge the ruling.

"President Bush said he was 'troubled' by gay people
getting married in (Massachusetts). He said on important
issues like this the people should make the decision, not
judges. Unless of course we're choosing a president, then
he prefers judges." — Jay Leno

6. Well, I am still here . . .
yup. Alive and kicking in Massachusetts. We just had a preliminary election. Some of the bigots in our state legislature who voted for a MA constitutional restriction of marriage to opposite-sex couples only, were resoundingly defeated. Any amendment to MA's constitution takes two separate state legislative sessions, two years running in a row, then it hits the ballot for a vote from the public. The restrictive amendment passed the first legislative session; we await next year's legislative vote, if any.

So far, Massachusetts has NOT fallen off the eastern seaboard. Unreal!!

7. This is excellent news
I was concerned they might do it the second time.

Do you know of any articles about this? Also, is a preliminary election like a primary or something different?

10. 5 provinces, 1 territory ...
And that makes at least three-quarters of Canadians now living in jurisdictions where same-sex marriage is allowed (and becoming more and more boring every day, I might add). The media aren't even bothering to cover the ceremonies now.
