Drop Karen a note:
Debate over cancelled Moore appearance rages on campus

By: BRUCE KAUFFMAN - Staff Writer
SAN MARCOS ---- Student government leaders at Cal State San Marcos said Tuesday they want to bring controversial filmmaker Michael Moore to North County even though his planned visit has been vetoed by the university's leadership.

The student government, Associated Students Inc., will offer the director of "Fahrenheit 9/11" the $6,500 it voted last week to contribute to Moore's scheduled Oct. 13 appearance, said student government spokesman Roy Lee. On Friday, the cost of Moore's visit was pegged at roughly $37,000 ---- including a $25,000 speaking fee and $12,000 in lodging and travel expenses ---- that was to be paid largely by the university's general fund and other campus money.
Saying there was too little time to provide a "balancing perspective," top officials at Cal State San Marcos said no Monday to bringing the anti-Bush provocateur to North County before the November election.

Reaction on the campus was mixed Tuesday. Some students said that their money should not be spent to promote a one-sided political viewpoint. A leading college Republican praised Cal State San Marcos President Karen S. Haynes for the decision. A professor said the controversy presents a prime opportunity to exercise student minds. Still others called it censorship.

For those of you unfamiliar with San Marcos, it lies within San Diego County where there's no shortage of conservative voices...practically on every street corner (Reps Duncan Hunter, Darrell Issa, Randy Duke Cunningham reign).
