May I please beg for a simple request
PLEASE! I am in the process of sending out TONS of packages to churches and christian groups - see this thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x826631

In my package I am including at the end of my letter Minstrel Boy's wonderful links to various subjects in order for them to look at the information and decide for themselves. I am also sending e-mails to the Southern Baptist Convention and other HUGE christian organizations. I have no desire to stiffle free speech but in order to get this important task accomplished, many many preachers and religious people I suspect will find DU (watch the membership go up - hopefully?).

All I ask is that people please don't post the "f" word in the subject line or GD or anything that would be immediately seen as offensive throughout the rest of the election. Is that too much to ask?

This election is too important to turn off anyone. Is this too much to ask?

1. I think that is a reasonable request
We're hoping that people will visit here to read the truth. No reason to risk chasing anyone away. I'm happy to keep my language clean in LBN and the two Discussion groups. I make no promises about the Lounge.

2. I don't speak for anyone but me but
it's good that you're being so proactive however it is also a bit much to realistically ask. We can't make ourselves "conservative" to avoid turning off christian conservatives, so you may be disappointed when nobody complies. Also, it's not out of defiance either -- by the time anyone looks at a post like this (especially on a Friday afternoon near rush hour) it will have scrolled by or out of range of anyone's interest.

Good luck with your mailing though -

3. I'm definitely not asking that we turn conservative
I'm very proud to be a liberal and make no apologies for it. Just the blatant "f" and "GD" in the subject line is all I am asking. ANd yes, I understand, late Friday, but the thought just came to me.

If it weren't important, I wouldn't ask or wouldn't care. But I know what I'm doing is critical and just might make a whole lot of difference in whose elected come Nov. 2. Please, just work with me on this.

well, at least not when I start threads, but was just suggesting that you might be disappointed - with 50 thousand members it's always um, entertaining!

10. There's nothing in the bible about the "f" word being a no-no.
Only the "J" word and "GD".

"F" is just a bodily function. I'm pretty sure its mention is not blasphemous.

16. I don't know, I'm going from 'Old' memory
on the way it used to be and how my folks react now. And I know the way they react will be the same.

Great points, I guess I'll ask the Mods, I'm not about stiffling any free speech, but I also don't want them turned off without giving DU's great resources a chance.

19. Oh, please. It's not blasphemy she's concerned about
It's crude, offensive, vulgar language (and only in thread titles) -- and the F word is definitely that.

20. I read somewhere that the "F" word
was an acronym for "Fornucation Under Consent of the King", that advertized licenced brothels in old England. I'm not sure I beleive that story. It seems more likely that it is Celtic slang for "fornucation".

I never understood why society views certain words, in themselves as "bad". It's the context in which they are used which is important.

4. Not everyone will read this message - you should write to the mods.
Only they can issue edicts. I personally don't use profanity in my post titles, and seldom inside, but a bit of profanity doesn't offfend me.

I'm a bit torn about this. I should think that anyone who sincerely wants to do God's work would be capable of listneing to people's hearts and not be distracted by profanity that mostly just exists for emphasis or humor. What planet do they live on if they can be sheltered from foul language? Even free cable channels have it now.

But not using profanity in headlines is a fair request.

Don't they have programs that will obscure foul language words when you're browsing?

5. I think if you really want to do this
it would be best to take it up with the Mods and make it a change to the rules. Try posting in the "Ask the Administrators" and see what they say. I know I try not to use bad language on here... too much... but hey, everyone's human.

I'll redouble my efforts, on your behalf, but I also agree w. earlier poster... getting EVERYONE to do this would be like herding cats. (Thus, the Ask the Admins post.... they have the POWER!)

11. YEs, I just sent an alert on myself to bring it to their attention
figured it was the quickest way.

To understand Baptists: My mother and father will NOT even watch an R rated movie, she gasps in disbelief and horror at cuss words. To see one in writing, I could see it being immediately assumed that this is not a place they would want to be.

This is the way it is and I understand them all to well.

Very brave of you to send them here, though. I am quite certain trolls will do their best to make sure to be offensive unfortunately.

17. Without using a single "bad word", people like Rush Limbaugh...
are TEN TIMES more profane in the things they say - like when he plays the "movin' on up" song for Carol Mosely-Braun, or when he tells black callers to pull the bones out of their noses, or when he plays his cute little song for the homeless update, because a nothing could be funnier than a man with $250 mil laughing at the most destitute people in society.

If the people you send here can't see that, they are probably beyond help.

18. I certainly understand what you're saying
and that type of crap makes me ill too.

Perhaps I'm making worry where there might not be any. I would presume they would go to the "archived" sites that Minstrel Boy posted with all the good info and those that agree and get angry will soon get into the liberal mindset - and may not wind up being too terribly offended. I've got a lot at stake in this and was just trying to cover all the basis.

I heard many people laughing...Bob Dylan

Okay TNOE, I will try not to say fuck, shit, damn or GD ( which I rarely say knowing it does offend the worst.) I agree that we have to play the Repuke game of trying to appeal to older folks who may be easily offended. But if they do say something about it, you can remind them that Dick Cheney said "Fuck YOU" on the floor of the Senate. If cussing is automatic dismissal from consideration, Cheney's WAY out.

23. DU might be kind of a harsh introduction to the left
Edited on Fri Sep-17-04 05:22 PM by RatTerrier
I could see them running for the hills once they read some of the threads here. They might see this place as a bit too free-wheeling.

I'm not trashing DU. Hell, I love DU. But I'd recommend something tamer like Buzzflash, Truthout or Media Matters. Might be a bit less shocking.

If they like what they see, introduce them to DU. DU might scare some of the non-politically saavy. Perhaps direct them to the front page articles, like the Top 10 or Plaid Adder instead of the forums. Gets a bit wild in here.

I do agree on the profanity, though. We should keep it out of the subject lines, IMO.
