From Democracy Now: "Invitation to terrorists? U.S. to ship over 300 pounds of weapons-grade plutonium across Atlantic."

"Greenpeace has launched a campaign to stop a controversial shipment that contains enough plutonium to make up to 50 nuclear weapons. While the government hasn’t done a threat or environmental assessment of the trip, the Department of Homeland Security has admitted it has conducted assessments of protest groups opposed to the shipment."

1. It's a very sad day when they believe it is MORE important

to investigate the protestors than do an assessment of environmental issues or possible threats for hijacking. :wow:

If the shipment were hijacked I get the feeling it would be covered up rather than admit the problem.

5. This isn't anything new. These shipments have been going on for years.

We've bought material like this from Russia to prevent it from being diverted to the black market. The stuff ends up at INEL in Idaho for storage. It's policy to buy stuff like this anytime a country wants to unload it. That's the only way we have of ensuring terrorists can't get it.

7. Is the US buying it or selling it?

The article seems to state that we are shipping it somewhere, not the other way around.

8. The US is shipping it to FRANCE so it can be converted to a

substance to be used in nuclear facilities in the US and shipped BACK to the US.

I don't care if they have done similiar or like things in the past... I stand by my first post.

9. The US is buying.

This has been going on since the USSR went bust. The ultimate destination is one of the government facilities. Most of the stuff has gone to INEL in Idaho to be stored.
