I was at a family get-together yesterday. My husband's ex and her current husband were there, and he launches in on a tirade about Kerry, throwing his medals, etc. He even said he had no problem with Bush joining the National Guard because "thousands of other guys did the same thing."
My husband opens his mouth to bring up Bush's Guard "record" -- and my stepdaughter's father-in-law, Joe, chimes in, too, with the same information. Joe and the brother-in-law, Dave, join in with me and hubby to just crucify this guy for his views. They also go into a tirade against the stolen 2000 election, Iraq, the economy, Clinton-bashing ("We had eight years of bliss when Clinton was in office," Joe says.) and Bush lies.
Joe and Dave are as red-neck as they come. NASCAR is like a religion to them. They drive pick-ups, vehemently oppose gay marriage. Neither of their wives has ever worked outside the home and they like it that way. Yet they GET it, and they are two people I never thought would.
"Bush is killing this country," Joe mused at the end of the day. "We've got to get him out of there. I'm near the end of my life, but I've got four grandchildren. What kind of life can they look forward to?"
