Hey, anybody besides me think Dan Rather's got something
up his sleeve for tonight?

That maybe Burkett is gonna expose a whole previously unreported shitpile that Bush left on the carpet back in 1972 or something? Maybe Project PUSH?

3. Personally, I think Rather is fucked
I don't think he is going to be fired, but I think he is going to slowly be put under wraps until he retires next year. That statement he issued is pretty clear evidence (in my view) that he lost a big showdown with management.

according to something I read on DU a couple of months ago.

not today. JMO.

9. Oh, but if
Rather was trying to allow Bush & Co to come out and say something even more incriminating or distatesful...gee - they do that all the time...anyway, I'm just hoping that something is very much going to come out about Bush & Co and it would be grand if Rather were the one.
Save himself and the rest of the country (the world)!

6. I've got my
fingers crossed...I find it hard to believe the Rather would be taken in so easily by whoever has done this...Plus, reading between the lines that Rather was trying to get the substance of the memos out rather than the memos themselves. Especially after hearing Secretary Knox's statements that these were the same sentiments/types of letters she herself had prepared.

Wouldn't it be sweet to hear Rather reveal a bombshell on tonite's segment where he offers up an apology about these particular documents but then reveals some unimpeachable & original document or direct statements. OR even better, he has proof positive that this was all coming from Bush & Co.

Anyway, I'm an optimist at heart and continue to keep the faith!

19. I agree - Rather will have interesting new disclosures up to the election
Why else would ABC tell their folks to back off on a dump on CBS -

It was not "fair play" - the corporate media whores at ABC smell something and are not jumping on CBS - yet.

Of course Russer and NBC are whoring along with Fox 24/7 - so it will be interesting to see if they follow ABC's lead in letting things develop before they start the game plan to remove Rather and his producer.

10. I think he won't let the issue drop
He might not have anything tonight...I hope he does, though...but he isn't through with this story. He knows that it has truth in it as witnessed by Killian's secretary. He will continue to dig to salvage his reputation.

Question: Why in the devil aren't Limbaugh, Hannity, et al ever questioned on the bullshit they are constantly spreading day in, day out. I know they aren't "broadcast news" whatever the hell that means, but they certainly act as if they are. And they probably reach more listeners than CBS, etc.

11. I think that....
CBS has got something, they are still too jittery from "the insider" debacle to allow Rather to say something without it being vetted five different ways. Maybe the typed memos are not what they seem, but maybe they have the stuff written in Killians handwritting.

12. Hannity & Limbaugh are political goons ...
... paid thugs ...
most of the right wing radio mouthpieces are political CIA operatives ...

Hannity, especially, is a paid whore. Others include Ingraham, Limabaugh, Bennett.

Bill O'Reilly, being Irish Catholic, has closer ties to Vatican Power Base rather than CIA ... that is why a rift is forming.

21. I've met Bill O'lie-and he has no Vatican power base! - he is pure asshole
without help from anyone, or any power center.

He was Boston Ch 7/Boston Herald years back - and we all recall the wonderful memories he left behind,

13. Limbaugh and Co. aren't questioned because they
are on the resident's side.

I guess we just have to wait and see what Rather does. It is useless to speculate.

14. I think Dan will be vindicated in the end.
Randi Rhodes just mentioned Molly Ivin's book published in 2000 called "Shrub" that pretty much recounts the same stories, so there is nothing new here. I think BushCo can't make this go away by shouting "forgery".

22. No, I don't think he has anything.
I think that we were deceived by CBS, who made it sound as though they had real evidence. I would never have believed that they would run with faxed copies of "documents" without having the originals. This appears to be a case where the redneck country boy fools the big time city slickers.

I had essentially lost faith in the media during the run up to the Iraq war, where nobody questioned the party line, including CBS.
This latest "event" again demonstrates how inept and unprofessional even the "gold plated crown jewel" news organization is.

Nope, Rather has nothing, and he didn't have anything in early 2003 either.

23. Rather has become a joke.
It's unfortunate, but the joke products are already amassing on eBay. Even if Dan finds something more, his reputation is ruined, I think. Any story he reports will be labeled by the Rethugs as "...well, remember those forged documents..."

Edited on Mon Sep-20-04 04:57 PM by SpiralHawk
The shit has a long way to roll until it gets to the bottom of this AWOL hill. Bush served dishonorably. Most people know that now, even if they are kool-aid guzzling defenders in deep denial. The truth is out there. Bush has a long history of skirking and jivving. As he did to TANG by deserting in the 1970s, he did also to the USA when he froze in the classroom on 9/11 and left the nation leaderless and defenseless.

27. I emailed Blitzer and Kurtz - who is going to restore your credibility
after they piled on Rather..changed the submect from the missing years
of Bush's National Guard Service to Rather's guilt, while the secretary
still said the essence of the Killian "letter: is true.
