Democratic Message on Iraq

We find ourselves in a situation in Iraq that does not present any easy solution. But the reality is that we are there. The reality is that we are losing troops every day and there will be more. We are calling on the pResident and our military leaders to adopt a plan to set up elections as soon as possible and to withdraw our troops contingent with those plans. We, as a Party, are going on record as in favor of elections and self-government for the people of Iraq. We do not wish to see this quagmire continue month after month or year after year. We expect this process to begin immediately. The American people are not prepared and do not wish to sacrifice young Americans every day in a place where we are not wanted nor appreciated.

But why shouldn't we come out ahead of the Repubs on this issue? This is going to be their position so why not let them adopt 'our" position?
