2. There are no such things
as assault weapons. When the law died, so did the propaganda terminology.

You may resume referring to the previously proscribed weapons as, semi-autos, rifles, pistols, or shotguns.

4. Were fully auto capable AK 47s on the list and no longer?
You say Semi-Auto but I thought that included rifles that could fire on automatic?

6. Fully auto guns are regulated separately
AWB had nothing to do with them and they are still highly regulated.

9. No full autos were ever on the list
Full autos were regulated under the Firearms act of 1934.

12. Negative
See Section 921 of the US Code - The categories "machinegun" and "assault weapon" are mutually exclusive.

14. You could have purchased an AK-47 during the ban
It wouldn't have had a flash suppressor, grenade launcher, bayonette lug or telescoping stock. It would have had the same pistol grip. There is no difference (in regards to how the rifle operates) in a pre-ban and ban era rifle.

No full-auto (machine gun-esque) rifle is available to civilians, unless it is purchased in such a manner that the ATF deems suitable. (correct taxes paid, background check, weapon being registered, etc.) The normal AK-47 or AR-15 military style rifles available are all semi-auto, meaning self reloading. A fully automatic rifle would be similar to a machine gun.

5. There is no difference
Muzzle loader and an M-16 merit no categorical distinctive terminology other than semi-load? That is pant load being unloaded. That a bolt action 22 caliber squirrel rifle and a M-16 are basically the same weapon except one is "less manual?" Are there entire magazines, and Associations devoted to Squirrel rifles since they are more or less all squirrel rifles?

10. M 16 is not an assault weapon
Since its fully auto, the AWB did not regulate the sale or possession of them at all.

Of course, a bolt action and a full auto rifle do indeed merit distinctive terminology. Getting the terminology right is your job.

7. Who DO you think you're kidding?
"You may resume referring to the previously proscribed weapons as, semi-autos, rifles, pistols, or shotguns"
Or fetish objects for the dickless. Or public menaces. Or assault weapons.

8. Dupe...
Edited on Wed Sep-15-04 12:01 PM by MrBenchley
"Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry blasted President Bush for caving in to the pressures of the gun lobby and allowing the federal assault weapons ban to expire, the Associated Press reported Sept. 14.
"Today George Bush made the job of terrorists easier and made the job of America's law-enforcement officers, harder and that's just plain wrong," said Kerry. "George Bush made a choice today. He chose his powerful friends in the gun lobby over the police officers and the families he promised to protect." "

11. Some were banned by name, others by features, but there's more to it
Edited on Wed Sep-15-04 01:40 PM by slackmaster
Here's the actual code. Search for "assault weapon" and you'll find it.

http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/921.html

Please see also http://www.atf.gov and look at the documents linked near the top of the page.

Caution: There's a lot more to it than the list in section 921 - Some weapons, e.g. IMI Uzi models are still banned from import under a separate statute as non-sporting firearms; the Street Sweeper and Striker 12 shotguns were declared by regulators to be "Destructive devices" and are covered under provisions of the National Firearms Act. Those and many others are no more available today than they were under the AW ban.
