the scoop.
Although Imus hasn't specifically stated why, Imus withdrew his endorsement during or immediately after the Repub Convention. So it might be the convention, or it might be an incident that happened that got Imus upset, as I describe below. But since Imus hasn't endorsed Bush, I think maybe it's only partly the convention, partly Kerry's campaign (or lack thereof lately), and partly the incident.
Kerry and Edwards and their entourage were crisscrossing the country on their own train campaigning several weeks ago. I think it's the same train that carried either Kennedy's body or FDR's. Anyway, it's a famous train. During that train tour, the train was scheduled to go through Imus' property (in Arizona, I think it is). Imus and his wife own a large ranch that they run as a nonprofit charitable ranch for kids with cancer. The train tracks run through the edge of their property. So Imus calls the Kerry campaign and speaks with someone sorta high up and asks for Kerry to make a stop and either wave or say hi to the kids. Imus wants to take the kids out to see the train come through and see the presidential candidate. He thinks they'll get a kick out of it. (Mind you, Imus is totally devoted to his charitable ranch and the kids they help. So he is serious about anything he thinks the kids will like.) Anyway, Imus never gets a call back on the matter. I think Imus may have tried to call back again. The day comes and goes, and Kerry's train doesn't stop at the ranch. Imus was very upset and angry about this. Very. He talked about this for days on his program. He was angry not only because the train didn't stop, but also that no one even called him back about it. It wasn't too long after that that Imus withdrew his endorsement, but I never heard him say exactly why.
Imus has been clear, though, that he is not endorsing Bush at this time. So tomorrow should be an interesting interview.
I'm not crazy about Imus. He's strange and somewhat hostile to a lot of people and a lot of ideas, it seems to me. But he is at least interesting, and he has good guests. He is also unpredictable, which I like. (I mean, Rush and Scarborough and Hannity are all pretty predictable.) The thing that bothers me most about him is that he's sexist (IMO).
