What Views Of Yours Make you Politically Un-Electable??
Edited on Thu Sep-09-04 03:09 PM by southpaw4kerry
Just wondering. I think that I could never be elected to office because I have some rather extreme views that would never float well as a public official. My most extreme views which I am sure will garner me a lot of angry responses, and probably are completely unenforceable even if someone were to go with them are:

- Marijuana should be legalized, taxed out the wazoo and sold by licensed facilities to anyone over the age of 18 who wants it. Anyone caught distributing without a license would be fined many thousands of dollars on the first offense and jailed with serious time for the second offense. Anyone caught operating heavy machinery while high on marijuana would have serious jail time (5-10 years) for the first offense.

- No smoking restaurants/bars nationwide.

- Drinking age lowered to 18 nationwide. Fact of the matter is I am not going to tell someone that at 18 they're old enough to be murdered in an unjust war in Iraq, but at that same age they are not old enough to drink.

- Enact legislation to protect children from unfit parents - competency tests for parents who are found to neglect their children. Stricter legislation to enforce active parenting. And federal funding for birth control and planned parenthood organizations to keep people who shouldn't have children from "accidentally" having them.

Okay fire away. I know I'm probably now labeled as a nutjob. You? :)

Edited to add: Oh yeah I'm an athiest too! Odd that I didn't even THINK of that as a factor against getting elected, isn't it? :)

Besides that I think my belied that we should decriminalize weed and allow weed to be used for medical purposes would keep me from being elected. I also support drafting rich men and women who opted out of military service in their youth, but are all for war in their late middle-age.

Believe the Second Amendment should be enforced as written: That is, everyone who wants a gun has to be part of a "well-regulated militia." That's two weeks of training by licensed professionals, every year, for each firearm a person owns.

That would probably be enough.

It fits right in there alongside my NARAL and Hemlock Society memberships. And I've always felt that if you needed kids in your life, you should buy some - there are, after all, lots of spares...

More seriously, I was child-free for 52 blissful years (though twice married) until I fell in love with a woman who has three wonderful teenage daughters. I am now encouraging them in the strongest possible terms not to make me a step-grandpa. Ever.

11. I'm in favor of legalizing not only same-sex marriage but GROUP
marriages. I know many people in "polyamorous" households, and find them inherently more loving, more stable, and a better environment for the raising of children.

That, and the fact that I view "God" as a nontheistic being and more like Paul Tillich's "ground of all being", would make me totally unelectable.

17. I'm not sure if I'm totally unelectable, but:
I think marijuana should be legal for adults to use and cultivate (and distribute to other adults).

I think licensed prostitution should be legal.

I'm an agnostic Jew. And I don't have a position on Israel.

I'm opposed to abstinence-only education and don't believe "sex is only to happen between one man and one woman who are married and monogomous" or however it is they're phrasing it these days.

I believe consenting adults should have the right to do pretty much what they want to do in private, so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else.

I believe that the government should get out of the marriage business altogether; failing that, same-sex unions should be treated identically to opposite-sex unions.

I am opposed to the death penalty in all circumstances -- yes, even for terrorists and child-killers.

29. That list is similar to mine.
Mine would exchange atheist to pagan. Why this would matter to voters is beyond me, because I feel strongly about the separation of church and state. Translation - believe in whatever you want, just stay out of my face about it.

Let's see, I would add:

Impose extremely heavy taxes on alcohol, tobacco, and those newly legalized drugs.

Impose extremely heavy taxes on guns and ammunitions, except hunting rifles.

Impose much stricter limits on mergers and acquisitions by large corporations.

Heavily fund development of solar, wind, and other alternative energies, while drastically reducing government supports on traditional fuels.

Impose much greater regulation and oversight of the nuclear power industry, essentially driving it from existence.

That and my past use of um, some things, make me unelectable as dog catcher or anything else!

26. Hey, I like your platform
My idea (which even my wife thinks is nuts) is: I want to run for congress on the premise that I won't vote for any new laws, and in fact will spend my term trying to repeal whichever laws I think screw things up.

I got this idea when I got one of those constituent mailings from my gasbag state senator, about how proud he was of sponsoring a bill against granny-bashing, to "protect our elders." So I called his office to ask whether there was anything that was legal in existing law that his bill would stop, which of course there wasn't. He just wanted to make brownie points with his base.

This actual law probably would have been harmless, but we do have too many laws that aren't well thought out, and contradict each other. The reason why lawyers seem to have near-magical powers is that they know how to find and exploit these contradictions. And of course this condition leads to real problems like Bush v. Gore.

Of course this platform lends itself to caricature: "Vote for me, and I promise NOT to do my job!" etc. But I still think it's a good idea.

I'd legalize all vices like drugs and prostitution (male and female) for starters. Why can't the government figure out that they can't tell people what they can and can't do when it comes to adult actions? I guess they forgot how much of a failure prohibition was. I have too many crazy ideas that would prevent me from being a viable candidate. I agree with you on lowering the drinking age to 18. They do it anyway. What's even crazier is that I don't drink or do drugs, but I feel everybody should have the right to do either if he/she wants to.

- Atheist. Make that a "hard-core atheist".
- In favour of the complete legalization of ALL recreational drugs, up to and including heroin.
- Totally support gay marriage.
- Would support polyamorous marriages.
- Completely pro-choice. Against any and all legal limits on abortion.
- In favour of assisted suicide, preferably but not necessarily with a doctor's involvement.
- Utterly opposed to the death penalty in all circumstances.
- In favour of the registration of all guns.
- Socialist, whatever that means in the modern context - certainly in favour of nationalized health care, education, road systems, military, food inspection agencies etc.
- Would reduce patent protections on urgently required medications
- Would legalize prostitution.
- Would greatly expand immigration limits and increase refugee protection.
- Would supply birth control information and equipment to third-world nations.
- Would greatly expand "no-strings" aid to needy nations.
- Would embark on a policy of debt forgiveness to needy nations.
- Would increase support for Palestinians and decrease it for Israel ("fair and balanced", y'know?)
- Would recognize and supply development aid to Cuba.

What's interesting is that the above laundry list probably wouldn't keep me from getting elected in any western nation except the USA...

That means no more electoral college and no taxation without your say in how the money is spent. They could also be fired for incompetence if a majority vote says so.

Add Freedom of Religion...to include freedom from religion.

Make it a federal crime to mention Religion in a political speech making a real seperation of church and state.

Reform the criminal justice system so that it treats the rich and poor the same.

Make doctors and lawyers salaries set by the state so that the only people practicing these professions were the ones who really wanted to help people besides themselves.

Create a system where the rich and the poor are not so far apart.

I think that would all be a good start.

54. What would keep me out of office
  • tightened immigration regulations and firmer security along the southern as well as the Canadian borders

  • decriminalization of medicinal marijuana, with regulations

  • gun regulation to be made a city/county matter rather than a national issue, so that urban areas can enact needed controls that would be unnecessary in rural areas

  • nationalized health care that can fund some common life-critical operations for everyone regardless of private means and insurance (ex: heart bypasses, diabetic supplies)

  • limit military spending so that we spend no more than the rest of the world put together, or 10 percent of our entire federal budget, whichever would be greater

  • fully fund K-16 public education for those who are willing to go beyond high school.

    55. Most of them.
I think every American has the right to clean, safe, environmentally friendly housing. And food, education pre-school - college or trade school, clothing, and quality health care. I think every elderly or disabled person who needs assistance, someone to give care, should get quality, loving care.

I think campaigns should be 100% publicly funded, with equal $$$ and air time to all.

I think we ought to be using IRV and/or proportional representation.

I think the health of the planet and all of her living things is just as high a priority as the needs of human beings.

I think we ought to have a Constitutional amendment guaranteeing the right to privacy.

I think we ought to repeal corporate personhood.

I think we ought to strictly limit how many media outlets any one group can own or control, and I think public radio and tv ought to be fully funded by the public. And I think we need more public channels/stations.

I think we need to regulate energy production and consumption, and abolish non-renewable, polluting sources.

I think we need to regulate human population by limiting births until we bring it down to less than 10 digits, and then limit births in order to keep it balanced.

I think families should be able to live well on one income.

I think we need to build a whole new infrastructure for mass transportation.

I think we ought to stop building over open space and restructure/redesign/rebuild/reallocate the space we're already using.

This is kind of fun; I could go on all night, but I'm getting hungry!

That makes me evil, you know. :)

Also, I'd make strides toward socialized medicine.

    Drastically reduce military spending.

Drastically increase educational, environmental and medical spending.

Doctors would be paid less than teachers.

No more than 12-15 kids to a classroom.

    Change those stupid standardized tests.

Gear education toward critical thinking rather than rote memorization.

Um, that would probably be enough to get me assassinated on day one were I miraculously elected. :)

    - Dramatic reduction of the military

    - Legalize prostitution

    - The end of the war on drugs

    - Repeal of all gun control to NFA 1934

    - Non-discriminatory marriage laws

    - Universal healthcare

    - Federal funded job training programs

    - Abolishment of many federal agencies including DEA, ATF, & FCC

Hmm... yeah that's mostly it... I don't think those would go over well for most people.

    66. Oh, boy, here goes:
    1. Put the Pentagon on zero-based budgeting and make sure it can demonstrate actual need for each weapons system and base.

    2. Eliminate the cap on FICA assessments and include investment income while raising the minimum to $10,000 to provide real tax relief to the working poor.

    3. Break up the media conglomerates and do not allow multiple ownership of broadcast outlets.

    4. Reinstate the Fairness Doctrine

    5. Abolish interscholastic sports except for maybe one or two big regional Olympic type events per year.

    6. Emphasize literature, history, political science, economics, the arts, and foreign languages in school.

    7. Limit government contracts to companies that have more than 50% of their non-executive workforce in the U.S., and give them preference points for having greater percentages of U.S.-based workers.

    8. National health care, easily financed by the Pentagon being put on a diet

    9. Put people back to work through rebuilding our national infrastructure, which has been neglected since the 1970s. Build high-speed rail between city and mass transit systems within cities. Retrofit suburbs to make it easier to get around without a car.

    10. Add two Constitutional amendments:

    a) All bills coming before the House or the Senate must deal only with one subject. No sneaking through undesirable "riders." (Many states already have laws like this.)

    b) If a Congress critter votes to go to war or to authorize war, then his/her relatives will be the first to be drafted.

    Am I unelectable yet?

    69. I Intend to Run For Public Office
I'm ramping up for a local government run in 2006. That said, there are some issues that might be problematic for me.

    - Sanctity of Marriage. I support changing the marriage system to eliminate all government-sanctioned marriage and institute, in its place, a system of civil unions for any two people who want to be entitled to the benefits currently assigned to marriage (joint tax benefits, hospital visitation, insurance, etc.). I believe marriage is a religious institution and therefore the government has no business screwing with it. Government gives civil unions to ANYONE, regardless of gender and sexuality. Churches are in charge of "marriage", and can feel free to discriminate the way they do now.

    - Death Penalty. I oppose the death penalty in all cases.

    - Gun Control. I believe that the Second Amendment of the Constitution was intended to empower the citizens of this country to overthrow a tyrannical government by force if absolutely necessary, and as such, I believe there should be no limitations to the types of firearms a person should be allowed to possess.

    - Pledge of Allegiance. I believe not only that the phrase "One Nation, Under God" should be removed from the Pledge (restoring it to its Pre-McCarthy-Insanity state), but that the Pledge should not be recited in public schools AT ALL, with or without the phrase. The entire thing smacks of indoctrination and brainwashing and it asks children to enter into an oath of loyalty that they are often not equipped to understand.

    - Health Care. I believe that health care is the right of every human being, not a privilege just for those lucky enough to be able to afford it. As such, I believe it should be provided by the government in the same way that education is.

Those are the top five extremely controversial things that could pose a problem for me in elected office.

    70. Ooooh fun! Nobody for President!
First of all, I'm an atheist. I'm also not married and have no interest in this. I'm a working class woman who did not go to college and do not have scads of money.

I was born during Vietnam, and though I was in my 20s during the first Gulf War, I didn't volunteer to go serve. I woldn't have been accepted if I did - minor physical problems.

I speak too many foreign languages, including one I taught myself.

That's just image. Let's actually talk about issues now, assuming the Republicans would ever get there past all the mudslinging.

Universal health care. And do something about the insurance companies that gouge consumers and tell doctors what they can and can't do. If you're uninsured, you pay extra for the privilege in some cases. I know. I currently have no health insurance.

Members of Congress, the President (myself), and anyone else in the federal government will be eligible for the median health care coverage of the citizens of the USA. They can choose to forego this coverage, but they can't have better. What's good for the people is what's good for the President and Congress etc.

School board members and school superintendants must spend one day a month as a substitute teacher unless they already have a teaching career.

Legalize and regulate the crap out of prostitution. Tax it heavily. The price will be added onto the going rate. Prostitutes will be licensed and be required to have regular checkups to ensure that any STDs are caught and treated. Those with no STDs will be certified as such. Anyone buying the services of a prostitute will be required to disclose STD history. This will protect the spouse of said customer so that they'll be less likely to contract an STD.

    Stem cell research yes.

Union yes. The Steelworkers are pioneering a new program where you don't have to work in the steel industry to join their union. This is a good idea and should be encouraged. As president I'd encourage more associate members of unions.

Kyoto yes. Bush backed out of our signed agreement and I'd get us back in compliance. We signed it, we should honor it.

Legalize and tax the crap out of marijuana.

Tax unearned income at a higher rate than earned income.

Require a minimum standard of living. We're civilized, we should prove it by looking out for other people instead of saying to ourselves, I've got mine, too bad for you.

Ensure that women are considered full human beings, even when pregnant. If she wants to abort, it's not the government's business.

It's also not the government's business who you want to marry. Two consenting adults of any sex can wed.

Religion is a personal matter, not a government matter. Keep church and state strictly separate. Repeal the laws in the seven states that currently ban those who don't profess a belief in a supreme being from running for public office.

Require the same ballots nationwide and ban any company that makes election paraphernalia from contributing to any political party or candidate.

Pass laws requiring passenger vehicles to get at least 35 mpg. This will include Hummers.

Raise the minimum wage to a living wage level. Exemptions will be given on a case by case basis but only for those privately owned companies that cab demonstrate that their owners are grossing less than 50 times the gross pay of the lowest paid employee, including part timers and temps.

The list goes on but it's late and my fingers are tired. Am I unelectable yet?

    77. End Oil Wars, End War on Terra, End War on Drugs
Life in the USA will suck for a few years, but I think we should swallow the bitter pill and send our economy to rehab to remove its addiction to foreign oil. Alternative fuels and conservation are the tickets. Sucks, but its better than sending our guys to die while "liberating" oil fields in other countries.

War on Terra is a joke. War on Drugs is a ridiculous waste of money and time.

Scale back the military to only twice what the #2 country has, instead of 20x, as it is now.

    80. My most controversial stances
Edited on Fri Sep-10-04 03:20 AM by CarlW
I am opposed to all vice laws, such as laws against drug use, prostitution, and gambling. I believe that drug use is a health issue and should not be a legal one.

I support gay marriage and adoption. Either make marriage legal for all or get the government completely out of it.

    I am opposed to censorship.

I think ALL discrimination should be outlawed.

I think that anybody who works full-time should be able to afford to pay rent. I'm in favor of the government doing whatever it takes to make that the case, whether it be funded housing, increasing the minimum wage, rent control..whatever it takes.

I think that anybody who wants to work should be able to, even if it's a government-created job.

I believe health care should be available to everybody.

I believe the government should stay out of people's bedrooms.

I think that felons who have done their time should have the right to vote.

    81. there are way too many reasons
    Apart from the facts that
    I am a female
I am a first generation immigrant and have an accent
and I have a brown skin,

the following beliefs wouldn't help -

    - Atheist. Personally I think religion as preached and practised has outlasted whatever little utility it once had. It has a lot more negatives going for it than positives right now. While that can be debated in the context of shaping personal character and morality, it has absolutely no role in the public space in deciding government policies, ideals and priorities.

    - Stop invading countries. Don't kill people just because you can. Convince every American that just because "them" foreigners look and speak different, they are not evil and they are not out to get "us" and "our freedom". We are one specie sharing a whole lot of DNA.

    - Get out of the security/arms export business right away. Government has no business helping a very few people to make a whole lot of money by directly or indirectly killing a lot of people all over the world.

    - Universal healthcare

    - On demand abortion

    - human rights belong to all humans. That includes right to marry whomever they want as long as the other person is willing.

    - Focus on alternate, renewable energy and public transport. To exhaust hundreds of thousands of years' creation of fossil fuel in 100 years without even thinking about its alternative is just stupid.

    - pollution control.

    - human health is a lot more important than profits of a few pharma companies and their patents

    - promote a culture where intelligence, respect for others, honesty and knowledge are admired, not derided; where stupidity, ignorance ,coward postures and bullying are not considered as leadership qualities.

    - respect and reward good teachers, invest in quality public education and public broadcasting/media. Stop a few big corporations monopolizing all access to information.

    - true love for science and technology and a faith in them to deliver the goods for everyone and invest accordingly - broadband internet access, stem cell research, drugs, biotech/nanotech..

    - commit to reverse US and global Gini coefficient (income inequality indicator which has been increasing over the last 25-30 years and growing sharper and sharper). Whatever -ism it takes to achieve it, be prepared to adopt it.

    - respect every citizen of the world, each of their communities and their thousands of years of civilization and shared history. Do not treat them as interchangeable cogs in a global market - the cheaper the better.
