Why Does Bush Still Say Nook-yoo-lar?
It really gets under my skin. This is the leader of the free world mispronouncing a very serious word. Has not ONE advisor pulled him aside to correct him? It's very embarrassing.

5. It's now an acceptable alternate pronunciation
Thank the same meatheads that made 'irregardless' acceptable.

14. "Acceptable alternate pronunciation"...according to whom?
Idiots? Quasi-literate cretins who also think there's nothing wrong with use of apostrophes in plurals? The same numbwits who say "less" when they mean "fewer" and all the other linguistic sloppiness that's a large part of the reason the rest of the world considers Americans idiots? Well, they can go fuck themselves with a spiked dildo, because they're STILL wrong.

22. Throw in the use of "nauseous"
when you mean "nauseated" and I'm with ya.

I'm all for a Constitutional Amendment that says any president must be fluent in his or her birth language.

29. Isn't it horrid?
Then again... I suppose language does evolve over time. When I find myself flinching at misuse / mispronunciation, I always think perhaps I'm just being a linguistic luddite.

Withinne a thousand yere, and wordes tho
That hadden pris, now wonder nyce and straunge
Us thinketh hem, and yit they spake hem so.

30. you know in the 'The Story of English' (McCrum, Cran & MacNeil)
they talk about upper class English accent in the time of Queen Elizabeth I, sounding much like the Eastend or Cockney of today sounds.

but 'assessory' is a pet peeve of mine. it sprung up on the first floor of the downtown Seattle Nordstrom store in the early 80s (at least that's the first and only place i heard it used, as in "Assessories, this is Buffy speaking!" and "We need to assessorize that dress."), and as Nordstrom spread, so did 'assessory', and i hear it now in TV shows (Law and Order characters are extremely sinful).

same folks say mis-chee-vee-us too. WRONG. it's mis-chi-vus.

off-thread rant over. for now.

that it makes him seem more human and fuzzy, folksy. If it was hurting him, he'd have dropped the affectation years ago.

10. I think they've told him to continue to say it that way, and others around
him have said it as well (or as poorly, LOL). It's easier for many to say, because linguistically follows "secular" or "macular" or "vehicular." "Nuclear" has its own phonemic style, and it's harder for lazy speakers. So let's all just be lazy!

13. Uh... because he's a fucking moron?
The only surprising thing is that the Mediawhores, especially FAUX, haven't started saying it exactly like he does. I've noticed how they like to pick up Bush/PNAC invented language now and then, i.e. the phrase "homicide bomber", which didn't exist 5 years ago.

Of course, Jimmy Carter was also way smarter and did not have the constant gaffes of the chimp. So it was no as annoying.

23. I don't know why people mispronounce the word, but

many do. Jimmy Carter does. You're not alone in your feelings, it grates on my nerves to hear anyone mispronounce a commonly used word, particularly when it's done repeatedly.

(Not to let Bush* off the hook, merely to point out there are others hanging on the same hook.)

27. I've come to believe that it's an act.
The man is actually a sociopath and is using this affectation to appear harmless. And, with half our population, it's working. Seriously, I googled information on the traits of a sociopath and it's remarkable how the description fits Dubya. Ted freaking Bundy is running our country and half the fucking country is willing to let him slit their throats.
