Must reading to understand what is going on - by David Brock
Today, we spent a rainy late summer day in Barnes and Noble....one book hat I spent the most time with is "The Republican Noise Machine - Right Wing Media and How it Corrupts Democracy", by David Brock - Amazon link here:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1400048753/qid=1094524733/sr=ka-1/ref=pd_ka_1/103-2526064-3978254

I suggest that anyone who is questioning the bizarre media spin supporting *, read this book...it won't make you feel any better, just more knowledgeable and aware...and also confirm your observations of the insanity that is going on.

5. Essential Reading
I agree that this book is very important. Brock does a great job laying out in gory detail how various elements of the Republican propaganda machine work together in a coordinated manner to control the public dialog in the country. It is essential to understand if we are to combat it effectively. And, it also provides a blueprint for democratic and progressive groups to create something similar -- but without the lies and hate. I believe that sticking with the truth the best policy in the long run (besides allowing me to sleep at night). The issues is how to effectively communicate in the current political/media environment.

9. Another one
Coincidently, I list "The Republican Noise Machine" as essential reading on my blog. Another book of important is "What's the Matter with Kansas" by Thomas Frank. He explores the question of why non-wealthy Red state citizens support politicians that push a pro-business agenda that works against their economic interests. By effectively raising "values" above economics, Republican strategists have lead millions of people to vote against their own interests. The whole values debate is key to understanding the dynamics of the politcal struggle in the country, as well as understanding what Brock has to teach on the ways Republicans control the means of discussion.

10. A great site
Brock does a great job on documenting the daily distortions of the Republican Noise Machine on this site. He was the best source I found on the whole Swift Boat Liar attack. He treated much more seriously, very early on, than the Kerry campaign did.
