Why I'm beginning to think CNN is more despicable than FOX
Edited on Sun Sep-05-04 05:15 PM by sundog
FOX is unabashed right-wing propaganda. It makes no real pretense about it. Everyone knows it. TV for bigots.

CNN, on the other hand, puts on a guise of somehow being more *liberal* (snarf) or somehow more *intelligent*.

It lures a more "liberal" audience in only to poison it with the same corporate propaganda. It throws enough liberal "carrots" too keep its audience coming back for more.

CNN is just as guilty as FOX. It is not the less of two evils... just more cunning.

5. I check...

...the Weather Channel and then switch to the BBC World News at 6:00 central time...maybe that would work for you?

Cheers,

2. At least FOX had today's US troop deaths on its website mainpage
CNN (at least right now, 5:00 PM Central) doesn't even mention it. You're right, CNN is the major media enemy right now.

8. I agree....to make it more clear:
Everyone knows FOX is fascist propaganda. The 40% who think that Saddam is Osama will always worship at the alter of FOX. CNN is worse because people think its more objective.

24. Would you really get rid of CNN and leave FOX?
I had a discussion with a guy a work last week in which he contended that FOX news was not biased, that it was as good or bad as CNN, etc. He was sincere in this belief. FOX attracts a wider audience than just right wing fanatics -- some people watch just to see Laurie Dhue's moist lips read the news, or because it reinforces their fear-based beliefs about the world -- without necessarily understanding things in political terms.

FOX is worse because it's well-packaged corrosiveness is working to gain market share -- and therefore influencing the rest of the media to follow suit. If I could get rid of only one network with a wave of my magic wand, it is easy to pick the one -- FOX.

Would you really get rid of CNN and leave FOX?

33. CNN is tilting to the right to compete with Faux
CNN has been losing the ratings wars recently and has been tilting right to the compete with Faux. Ths shift has been obvious and I expect the same from MSNBC sometime in the near future.

4. Except that Fox does make a real pretense.
The only reason they have been partially exposed for thier bias is the hard work of many people on the left to expose them. Before that they were 'Fair and Balanced' and few people outside of the left questioned it. Even now, Fox is still considered a legitimate news service. Even now its proponants argue that it is fair and balanced and that if it does have some conservative leanings, it just counters the overwhelming liberal media.

Yes, we here on DU and increasing numbers of people know this is a lie, but most of America still doesnt.

CNN is bad, but in a large part they are just reacting to Fox and the conservative media.

10. I just feel as if there will have to be a day when all media is held...
accountable. Unless we bring it to attention, they will continue their bullshit.

With the exception of Democracy Now/FSTV, it all looks pretty ugly to me right now.

I don't think CNN is reacting to Fox... CNN just has better packaging.

Over the right of the corporation to act freely.

Until this is done, the problem will never be solved.

6. Differentiating between major media outlets
is like differentiating between Pravda (Truth) and Izvestia (News), back in the Soviet days -- No "content" found there is to taken too seriously.

There are stylistic differences, perhaps, but I think that the old Soviets only lacked "polish" to mirror what is happening in our media.

It isn't a particularly competent farce, but it doesn't have to be.

And it speaks legions to those who have learned to look for the truths beneath. It speaks legions!

7. The last straw was when Sen. Warner thanks Wolf Blitzer on air
personally for his support in promoting the war in Iraq. It was, of course, before the whole shit house fell apart but it was still a blatant testiment to CNN's propaganda effectiveness but also a testiment to how those in power are aware of it and are freely using it to brainwash the public.

11. Yes, CNN is bad, but FOX is evil
Your assertion reminds me of Nadar's when he says that there isn't a dime's worth of difference between the democratic and republican party. While he may have a point in certain areas of consideration, I think it's pretty clear that there is a big difference between how Bush's presidency turned out and whatever a Gore presidency might have been.

FOX fosters HATE and division between the "reds" and the "blues" (to oversimplify a great deal). On a daily basis, it promulgates grand distortions and lies. Most FOX watchers believe there was an operational connection between Al-Qaida and Hussein. Some amazing shit. While CNN no doubt supported going to war in Iraq, it doesn't keep pounding long-disproven assertions so that they continue to retain legitimacy in the current political dialog. FOX makes it much harder to correct the distortions and misrepresentions of the administration.

But, CNN sucks so much that they're not really helping the situation significantly--they're not doing their jobs as journalists--keeping the government honest. The way mass media news operates, it reinforces the government's agenda, no matter who is in power. The government's agenda isn't particularly progressive, no matter which party is in power. If you haven't had a chance yet, the documentary "Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media" is essential viewing.

So, I agree that you have a point -- but FOX and the like are so evil that a distinction must continue to be made.

It like one says its an orange peopleater and the other says it's a yellow peopleater...

Meanwhile babies are dying in Iraq & neither wants to admit it.

Both equally guilty.

13. ok, CNN is WORSE than Faux News, and here's why...
Faux, NEVER had credibility so they had nothing to lose and nothing to betray.

CNN once had credibility. they sold it. and they have betrayed millions who once had trust in CNN as legitimate news.

in that betrayal, they are WORSE than Faux.

Faux was born a whore.

CNN sold out.

20. That's one way of looking at it.
They're both whores. But it seems to me the effect of FOX is more corrosive than CNN. And it operates in a different part of the media chain -- in a way that is worse. Fox takes bile and makes it palatable for CNN. Remember back to a time before FOX. The media sucked, but at least it wasn't actively working to bring about something approximating fascism.

They both suck -- but bluring the distinctions between them doesn't seem to serve a useful purpose.

23. CNN needs to make a buck
They have to pay the high priced talent and the high priced bosses.
Their hearts are still pure but they have to feed their kids.
I hate the fact that they have to do it, but we are all responsible because we allowed this country to shift to far to the right.
Yes, it is alright to bitch but now we need to thin out the herd.
If CNN is the weakest animal in the herd then it is time to go.

28. Who does CNN think is going to watch their Fox News 2 format?
I'm just confused as to why CNN is doing this. The people who watch Fox News call CNN the "Communist News Network" and these viewers will not be watching CNN again anytime soon no matter how far right they move. In the meantime, they've completely annoyed the people on the left, which perhaps explains why MSNBC has been doing so well lately. CNN repeats that they're the "most trusted name in news" now as much as Fox News blabbers on about "we report, you decide" and being "fair and balanced." MSNBC isn't perfect yet, but Rick Kaplan seems to have been improving this network since Jerry Nachman shit the bed.

Just how many people in this country want to watch Republican news? The CBS Evening News and Keith Olbermann's show are the only two news programs on television that seem to be fair anymore.

26. FOX is so bad
that they have their viewers convinced that CNN is the tool of the liberals. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard wingers spout this "truth". It is though they are completely unable to think for themselves. They just repeat what they have been told. I refuse to watch the Today Show because I find Katie Couric blatantly biased. They refer to her as Katie Communist and always criticize her for her leftist ways. I try to be open minded and do a reality check of my own perceptions, but I just don't get where they are coming from.

30. I agree. Fox has always been unapologetically a GOP hatefest
but CNN makes a pretense of being "the most trusted name in news" and all of that rot.

They have given over to the dark side, where as Fox has always been there.

To me, going over to the dark side is far worse than being born in it.

Both are evil, but one is spineless deliberate evil.
