1. No... I'm not sure exactly but

it wasn't later than some time in 1999, probably early '99.

You can download historical data at finance.yahoo.com in excel format in order to pinpoint the exact date of the close.

3. Okay, thanks, actually i think it did peak in Jan of 2000
But I was able to get better information at the site you directed me to--this was helpful.

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?t=5y&s=%5EDJI&l=off&z=m&q=l&c=&c=%5EGSPC

It shows the Dow down about 10 percent and the Standard and Poor's off close to 20 percent since W invaded the White House.

IIRC it closed right about 10,580 the last of trading under Clinton's term.

6. True, but it went up in Jan 2001 and then dropped and stayed down
also, down after three years is horrible, never mind how much.

7. We were in the same trading range for more than a decade in the 1970s
Some would say we are now in a secular bear market, while 1980-2000 was a secular bull market.

8. The year 2000
was the worst stock market year in 20 years. S+P fell about 9 %.

It didn't keep the record long though as 2001 was worse (-12%), and then the three year drop hit bottom in 2002 (-22 %).
