We have a "president" who FAKES an accent when he speaks to certain crowds.

How F-ing 8th grade pathetic is that? He is a New Englander! He was not BORN in Texas nor did he attend school there. He went to high school in Massachusetts (Phillips Academy). He got his undergrad degree (legacy admission) at Yale in New Haven, CT.

His brothers don't have accents, his parents don't have accents.

No accent in this 1992 (drunk?)video:

Contrast that with his fake accent appearance in West Virginia yesterday:

(Bush starts just after 10 minutes...at 10:23 there's the spaz laugh)

2. Forget 1992 . .

. . his accent changes radically between him addressing any official group vs. his campaign apperances out there amongst the "common folks".

Listen to his state of the union - then any of his stump speeches. It's totally phony. But apparently this does not deserve anything like the endless speculation regarding Gore's choice of clothing style during the last election.

Everyone wears the clothes that they believe are the most appropriate for the occasion.

Only the most brazen hypocrites would take on a phony accent to impress others. I'm not sure Bush does this consciously. I think being phony at that level is just a fundamental part of his personality - that he has no control over.

3. He emphasizes it for some people, but the underlining accent
is probably real. I lived 42 years in Pennsylvania, spent 6 years in SC, and 6 years in Tx. Once in a while I find myself unconciously saying something, only to realize an accent was there.

Shrub did spend a lot of his childhood in Tx. and I guess quite a few years as a quasi adult there too while he owned a share of the Rangers and of course Governor.

The thing that bothers me much more is the pretend cowboy walk! Now THATS FAKE!!!

4. Maybe
I spent a week in Canada recently and found myself saying "eh" a lot after a few days. I'll pick up an accent quite easily when I'm around people for just a few days. Not on purpose, more of an unconscious behavior.
