The FUNNIEST repub talking point
When asked "why is there so much focus on Kerry's war record?" they pat response is "well he made it a centerpiece of his campaign with his reporting for duty and salute".

Well isn't that interesting. The Republican party, that controls every branch of government, the media and every govt agency, gets it's agenda set by the Dem convention content. What a great record to be running on that Kerry's salute and his pride in service has sent the entire pack of hyenas into such a tizzy.

Fox news is going to have an organizational aneurysm.

1. Doesn't hold water anyway
the SBVT book was written prior to the convention, the group was established prior to his salute. It was all planned, signed, sealed and delivered before Kerry every wrote his campaign speech. Once again, Republican hypocrisy.

4. Not just "Republican Hypocrisy"
Plenty of Democrats (here) were ticked off that he spent so much time on his military record and so little on his career as a Senator AND so little on Bush's record.

6. it was a strategy
It is a lot harder to distinguish yourself on your voting record to people who think in black and white and only have a 5 second attention span than it is to point out the differences between serving your country honorably and being AWOL with a coke straw stuffed up your nose.

Kerry wanted to contrast himself from Bush in a way that was memorable, easy to comprehend, and would have meaning for the larger issues of "leadership". Abandoning subtlety was called for in this case.

2. going down in flames
In any debate you have two choices:

1. Appeal to reason and address the issues on their merits
2. Appeal to emotion to overcome reason

You do the first one when you are arguing from a position of strength, or at least some factual basis.

The second one is reserved for when you are going down in flames and you have nothing left but to try to rally the irrational to your side. The only hope left for the repugs is to continue to appeal to their irrational base with ad hominem and "turnabout" attacks.

It's a sign of weakness - but if we want to succeed we have to convincingly show them to be stupid to their own irrational base; the same base who refuses to see Fahrenheit because they're afraid of "thought control".

3. Well, the Repugs have made 9/11 the centerpiece of THEIR campaign
All we need is a DNC ad of Bush reading "My Pet Goat".

Remember folks, 3000 people died and New York City was viciously attacked under Bush's watch. And the only response he could muster was to sit and choke in front of a bunch of children.

Would I feel safer with Kerry in the White House? HELL FUCKING YEAH!
