Laura Bush is Full of Crap and Here's Proof
So, they put nice Laura Bush out there to debunk stem cells and say that it's all fantasy and might not even be useful.

Doctors Grow New Jaw Bone in Man's Back
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040827/ap_on_he_me/engineered_bones&cid=541&ncid=716
A German who had his lower jaw cut out because of cancer has enjoyed his first meal in nine years — a bratwurst sandwich — after surgeons grew a new jaw bone in his back muscle and transplanted it to his mouth in what experts call an "ambitious" experiment.

According to this week's issue of The Lancet medical journal, the German doctors used a mesh cage, a growth chemical and the patient's own bone marrow, containing stem cells, to create a new jaw bone that fit exactly into the gap left by the cancer surgery.

So, doctors grew a new jaw bone for this guy using stem cells and it worked and now he can eat again. And where did this fantastic, first of its kind, medical procedure happen? Must be the US, right? We're always on the medical forefront, right? No, it was Germany. One of the many other countries we'll all be flying to for our operations and birth control if the religious right get their way in this country.

2. wow--that is so overwhelming
and a perfect match at that-what a magnificient accomplishment on the part of German doctors. bratwurst sandwich--wow I am so happy for him--he has had a lot of pain to suffer.

When Bush announced his "wrenching" decision about stem cell research, it was reported that many of our scientists took off for overseas to continue research.

6. You mean that "Lump in the Bed" who said her hubby wrote her
such a lovly poem and all the Stepford wives swooned with envy and ragged on their husbands to be as Romantic as King bush*. Then a few months later after it had settled good among all the good folks she admitted Bush* had never written her any poem and that it was all a joke. Funny one at that Ha Ha Ha right???? LIES LIES LIES that is all these people know. Yes Laura is full of crap and has admitted to that on National TV. And she is probably the most honest of the lot..

She looks like a man in drag. What a tool. BTW, 'Pickles' and 'that lump in the bed' are contemptuous and insulting nicknames, IMO.

11. this makes my head explode
My father died from exactly this form of cancer (he was a pipe smoker, unfortunately) and not only was he terribly disfigured but it's a horribly painful form of the disease.

How terrible that Americans are left to continue to suffer because of religious whackos, while people in other countries can at least have some quality of life.

I'm hating Laura Bush right now with a white-hot rage. How dare this criminal boyfriend-killer fake pious righteousness and morality while leaving thousands of Americans behind to suffer. This woman who has lived a cushy life because her criminal husband cheated his oil business investors and people of Arlington telling US what morality is. It would be a comedy if it wasn't so fucking tragic.

12. reality check..part2
Who cares what Laura Bush says. All of these politicians, both sides don't know what they are talking about. The above mentioned article used the technology from "mapping" the human Genome that was finished 3 years ago with both government and private funding. All of this stem cell "we vs they" syndrome is all show for both sides. You heard it first her: ALZ will NOT be cured by stem cell research nor will Superman fly again. You all sound like some kind of conspriracy freaks who should be on the other thread.

Oh, boy... I was going to point out how ridiculous this thread was, but now I'd sound like this FReeper.

Seriously folks, refuting Laura Bush is a good thing. Completely misreporting a news article to do it is a bad thing. This article shows a technology that adult stem-cell research beat fetal stem-cell research to the punch. If this WERE significant, it would hurt the fetal stem-cell argument.

His own even.

Germany is very anti-Stem cell research, a reason for many researchers to emigrate.

17. Her remarks disgusted me anyway
How stupid to say that a cure wouldn't be found any time in the near future so there's no sense in exploring the technology! How far into the future will we find a cure if we DON'T? These people have no logical thought processes at all.

18. OK, in addition to relieving human suffering...
let's not forget that stem cell research is going to lead to a multi-billion dollar industry in a few years. We can either be part of it (and since it's essentially a "service" job it can't easily be out-sourced -- which is a big plus), and we can be left behind.

It would be like those people who said, "If God had meant man to fly, we would have been born with wings" had been in charge of the government eighty years ago, and the United States never developed an aerospace industry.

21. We are participating...
The USA is the leading country in Biotech research in the world. There is no way this science will progress without the US being in the lead. Stem Cell research is just the very small part of an overwhelming Gene science that began in the US over 20 years ago. We have the top scientists, companies, research, etc. Just because of some stupid politicians, both sides, this science is not going to be "outscourced."

Edited on Fri Aug-27-04 11:40 AM by Cleita
because his drinking has caused his liver to stop functioning and they can't find a match because of his age, then stem cell research is going to hit home with Laura. Oooo, How did they miss that? With self-centered, selfish and self involved people, an issue has to become personal to open their eyes, like what happened to Nancy Reagan.
