Americans worried about possible draft

WASHINGTON -- Despite repeated assurances from the Bush administration that there are no plans to reinstitute conscription, a national survey released Wednesday found that nearly two-thirds of adults are concerned that the country "could be headed for a draft in the near future."

Among those of draft age, 32 percent of those questioned said they would not serve if they were selected in a draft, and 20 percent said they would actively seek deferments.

Bobby Muller, president of the foundation, said he believed the numbers of those unwilling to serve would surprise many people if the draft were brought back.

"We have come so far from any sense of citizen-obligation, citizen-army type of thinking." Muller said. "I think it's going to shock America" to find so many unwilling to serve if a draft is reinstituted.

3. I thought there would be no deferments...
I thought it was: finish up the current semester and off you go.

4. It's not lack of citizen-obligation that makes people unwilling to be
Drafted. It's the poor quality of leadership in this country that will send draftees into necessary wars, like Iraq, and ontop of that, send them without the necessary equipment and with little benefits should the return maimed for life.
