I Need Some Education On An Issue-->Black Voting Rights
Edited on Thu Aug-26-04 11:22 PM by WLKjr
I want to be educated on voting rights, particularly African American voting rights. I want to know how they get screwed, history, laws that are on the books...I want to be told the works of the mess I hear so much about because I want to know, I feel stupid not knowing.

Can anyone educate me in this thread?

1. Google is a wonderful tool
It should cover what you didn't learn in school.

3. I know but
I would like to hea from an African American here first before I start. I prefer to hear from someone first before reading into an issue. It strikes up my curiosity and drive to find the truth.

2. lots of southern states had poll taxes, tests to take, etc
whites didn't have to do this because their grandfathers could vote....'grandfather clause', they were 'grandfathered in'

4. While you are at it, Check into Washington, D. C.
They, regardless of race didn't get to vote for President until 1972 after the voting rights ammendment was passed. They still don't have representation in either branch of congress. They are able to elect a non-voting member to the house. No one in the Senate represents them. They have three electoral votes, just like Wyoming. Population of DC is probably greater than that of Wyoming.

7. The Voting Rights Act Of 1965
parts are set to expire in 2007..........Which are a joke anyway with 1.7 million African Americans votes thrown away in 2000. If the act was enforced Florida debacle would never have happen. Can you REALLY count on AG John Asscrack to enforce the law?

9. 1964 Democartic convention is when the problem began
If Humphrey want to be on Johnson's ticket as VP he had to convince the Misissippi (Black) delegation they could NOT be seated.
Lots of links on it

We have a lifetime of pandering to the Black community but mostly lip service as certainly proved in 2000. Ask Cynthia McKinney!
