Know Anything About The Guardian Angels?
Edited on Thu Aug-26-04 10:03 PM by B. P. R. D.
Not the divine kind, I am talking about those guys in red berets and jackets who say they protect New York City.

GuardianAngels.com

Whenever I see one on TV, especially their leader Curtis Sliwa, I get a bad feeling, like these guys are thugs that shouldn't be trusted. I don't know much about this, so please educate me.

1. Sliwa is a Neocon supporter on TV
they generally promote a "tough guy" intolerant position.

Sliwa was, I believe, beat up and has spent the remainder of his life getting revenge.

2. Curtis Silwa gives off a brownshirt vibe.
I don't trust anyone in a red beret.

5. Hey, I used to wear a red beret - just to confuse the feds on a tiny
campus in California back in the 70s. Noticed they made notes/took photos of the black guys in black berets and teh chicanos in their brown berets. Felt left out and went to school in a red one, with white jersey top and navy blue hot pants. They never got the joke.

3. I Thought Vigilante Types
But their website makes it sound like they are an expanded neighborhood watch & have won the approval of Oprah.

Still, their website www.guardianangels.org also says they assist victims of "Hurricane Charlie" A small detail, but it was "Charley"

6. I have heard Curtis Sliwa on his radio program and he is similar to
Savage Weiner in views and accent.

7. Trust your feelings
Belonging to the Guardian Angels is an excuse to act like an asshole with the tacit approval of "Joe New Yorker." I am positive that there are good folks there (any group that says they do good will attract people who really want to do good), but they are not the ones in charge.

Good to know. They freak me out way too much though. There must be a psychological reason for it.

10. Well, we all know what the road
to hell is paved with.

I grew up in NYC, and was probably in early high school when they formed. It always seemed like Curtis Sliwa was only about the power/publicity trip. Maybe-I-can-be-a-big-fish-in-a-big-pond thing. Did I feel safer when they were on the train with me? No, and that's the critical failure. I would rather have a cop any day of the week. At least the cop didn't *want* to fight; I felt the Guardain Angels were all about being tough and looking for the fight.

11. It's their leader:
Curtis Sliwa is a jingoistic, platitude launching, disingenuous, unethical, mentally challenged, propaganda espousing dilettante.

Did I leave anything out?
