Is there some kind of black armband thing for when the casualties hit 1000
I heard this mentioned in passing on Bernie Ward's show last night, though he never elaborated on it. I was unable to find a website. I would like to wear a black armband when the Iraq casualty toll hits 1000, but I was wondering if there was some kind of campaign in the making.

18. That's great!
It's be hard to call a general labor strike right now anyway. How many jobs have evaporated in the last 3-1/2 years?

4. Not black too much like Nazis try Red for the color of blood with
the number 1000 and counting on it. I suggest you produce a bumper sticker type item which can be shipped flat and which can be simply pealed and wrapped around the arm. They would be cheep to produce and I think many would buy them to show solidarity.

24. U.S. military wore black armbands when JFK was killed.

It's protocol. I remember it very, very well, as I lived on a military base at the time.

Beyond that, men used to wear black mourning bands when someone died, just as women wore all black clothing. There's a long history for black mourning bands. Don't know where you get the Nazi idea.

25. Yeah, black ribbons worn across badges when police officers die etc..
It's funny; I read about black armbands or ribbons IN HERE,some days ago. I thought it was a fabulous idea.

I then wrote to Bernie Ward about it...lol....Now, he's telling it back to you's ... maybe someone else wrote to him too...who knows. Funny all the same.

I'm going with ribbons (chick here)

I think Red is reserved for Aids awareness..

12. That's a great idea for a protest - light and then snuff 1000 candles...
Perhaps with a reading of the names. 1000 points of light indeed.

Lining Main Street. Each with the name and photo of one of the soldiers. Taps to be played. Candles extinguished one by one.

At 7:30 pm Mecom Fountain on the Friday night following the 1000 toll (using CNN website), unless the 1000 toll is announced on a Thursday or Friday, in which case it will be on the following Friday.

7. We need a strong leader.
We have all these ideas, but no one to coordinate them. Kerry isn't going to ask for a general strike, or black arm bands or a thousand points of light. Sigh.

Don't get me wrong. I'm voting for Kerry, but I wonder if he really has what it takes to take America in the right direction. I guess we'll see. Maybe his spine will harden.

10. 1000 military
Of course, the media has ways of playing little games with the numbers like "killed by hostile fire since President Bush declared an end to major hostilities". Or "killed by hostile fire since the handover of sovereignty to Iraqi officials."

20. without even mention 10,000 dead iraqi's
but then why would anyone care about them, either way the US dead surpassed 1000 some time ago, if your travelling in a vehicle blown up by an IED and then later die in an army hospital in Germany surely you died as a result of hostile actions? basically they're only counting those that drop dead there and then from explicit hostile actions.

9. Armband?...I would soon tire of the Michael Jackson references.
Edited on Thu Aug-26-04 09:53 PM by JohnnyRingo
Indeed, very tired. Very soon.
I too, want to draw attention to the needless loss, though.

I fear it will be the last media notable milestone in the war. After 1000, casualty figures will be much harder to find. The next media mention will be 5000.

I hope it doesn't happen in the very near future.
I would be thrilled to not add ONE more name to the list.

on edit...
I do keep daily track, though. I found that most RW, war lovin', support the troops, Buxh fans have no idea how many have fallen in Iraq. I like to inform them. (967)

To me every death is a sad milestone.

23. Black Armbands & Wear Red on Fridays
I received the following regarding wearing red on Fridays and have been doing it faithfully since April.
Combine it with a black armband, and it will be an even stronger statement.
Here is the main text of the idea of Fredom Fridays.
Pass it around:
"My name is Nadia Jensen and I have an idea for a quiet revolution.
Please take 5 minutes to read my email and then help me if you can: Here's
some history behind this idea: When Norway was occupied by Germany in 1940,
Norwegian women began to knit RED caps for children as a way of letting
everyone know that they did not like what was happening in their country,
that they didn't like having their freedom taken away by the Nazis.

My great aunt, Karin Knudson Myrstad, was one of the women who knit red caps
for her children and others.  Similarly, in Denmark, women knit
red-white-and blue caps (colors of the Allies) for the very same reason.

The result was that whenever Norwegians and Danes left their homes -- to go
to the store, to work, etc, they could see that THE MAJORITY opposed what
was going on in their country. As you know, both countries organized
effective Resistance efforts and changed history - - everything that
happened began simply by wearing red!!!! (or the colors of the Allies, in
Denmark).

I believe, as many of us do, that at the very heart of our democracy is our
right to oppose certain policies of our government. Increasingly, our
Government is redefining "freedom" in ways that make too many Americans
perceive that it is risky to oppose his policies -- and, in particular,
current inroads about individual freedoms and policies in the U.S. and
abroad.

However, many of us DO oppose what our government is doing to individual
rights--and I have an idea that will allow all of us to recognize each other
very easily so we can see that WE ARE THE MAJORITY.

SO... I have been thinking that it's time to take action in a way that is
effective and easy for all of us to do: Just wear red every Friday between
now and election day.

Wear a little or a lot-- just be sure that when you leave your house to go
about your day -- to work, to school, to the store, to the gas station,
wherever you go in your daily routine -- that everyone who sees you will see
that you are wearing red because you believe in freedom and you don't agree
with our current administration's policies at home and abroad. I'm really
certain that we'll see that

lots of us wearing red for freedom -- because WE ARE THE MAJORITY. We just
need a way to show each other who we are!!! Between now and election day,
ask everyone you know to wear red for "Freedom Fridays".

I have already spread the word to friends and have had a very enthusiastic
response. This email has been forwarded around the country by many who
receive it - feel free to send in on to your friends and co-workers.
Nadia Jensen"
