6. DITTO!!!!!!
I loved Paris when I was there for one day in 2001, and have vowed to go back. I was moved to tears by the battle damage to the stonework of Notre Dame. So lucky the whole city wasn't leveled by the Nazis!

11. Battle damage was from desperate snipers
who shot the crowd attending to the Te Deum in the cathedral with general De Gaulle on the 26th of August. It's a famous episode in France because everybody was scared, looking for cover, De Gaulle was just pissed off, standing tall, smoking a cigarette. He could have been killed at the time since he was quite good target. An episode which took a part in the legend, people were very impressed.

2. I wonder how long until Baghdad is liberated.

Funny how the French were right. I guess they know nazi bullshit when they see it.

3. And I, as an American..
thank the French for helping the Americans surround General Cornwallis at Yorktown. Just as they'd be speaking German without our help, we'd be speaking Brit-English without their help.

12. A friend of mine was there.
Danielle was my daughter's high school French teacher and faculty advisor. We became close friends. She was born and raised in Paris. When the city was liberated she was six years old.

The Germans had confiscated all the radios, so her first knowledge of the liberation was when an American tank came clanking up her street. When it stopped in front of her apartment building, she ran down to the sidewalk.

"A HUGE American sergeant jumped down from the tank and hoisted me on his shoulder. He carried me up onto the tank and gave me a ride to the end of the block. I remember we were both laughing and giggling. Thus began my love affair with America."

Danielle got a very stern lecture from her parents for running out into the street. "Everyone was so happy, I don't think they had the heart to give me a spanking."

13. The Partisan - Leonard Cohen
When they poured across the border
I was cautioned to surrender,
This I could not do;
I took my gun and vanished.

I have changed my name so often,
I’ve lost my wife and children
But I have many friends,
And some of them are with me.

An old woman gave us shelter,
Kept us hidden in the garret,
Then the soldiers came;
She died without a whisper.

There were three of us this morning
I’m the only one this evening
But I must go on;
The frontiers are my prison.

Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing,
Through the graves the wind is blowing,
Freedom soon will come;
Then we’ll come from the shadows.

Les allemands e’taient chez moi,
Ils me dirent, signe toi,
Mais je n’ai pas peur;
J’ai repris mon arme.
J’ai change’ cent fois de nom,
J’ai perdu femme et enfants
Mais j’ai tant d’amis;
J’ai la france entie`re.
Un vieil homme dans un grenier
Pour la nuit nous a cache’,
Les allemands l’ont pris;
Il est mort sans surprise.

Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing,
Through the graves the wind is blowing,
Freedom soon will come;
Then we’ll come from the shadows.

15. This is the version of "La Complainte Du Partisan" from
Emmanuel d'Astier de La Vigerie (Resistance name "Bernard").
A great version from L.Cohen.

The "Chant des Partisans" also known as "Chant de la Liberation" is the official battle song of the fighers.

Translation Mr Terry MAYLAM. Copyright Olivier Housseaux.

Original version:
