Ex-Republicans.. What finally made you see the light?
I would like to know.. As a lifelong Dem, I have tried many arguments with Repugs. I am in the middle of working my Republican uncle to see the light.. So, what finally broke your back to stop being a Republican?

1. education... the media....the distractions from real issues
the lies....the repugs care more about corporation A's bottom line

the average citizen.

IF, Kerry and company are the same when in office, the what does that

say about who really runs our world? Corporatism has control over

both parties. Let's see how it plays out.

3. I started reading more history
My "transformation" came around the time that Bush I was running for election (1988), and he just seemed so oblivious to the problems facing everyday folks.

I realized that voting for him was against my self-interest, both from a financial standpoint and from an I-want-to-grow-old standpoint (I was in the military at the time).

I started reading more and more about history and the beginnings of our country and the downfalls of other countries, and realized that many of the things that the Republicans stood for were counter to the Constitution and the "American Way of Life" in general.

Never looked back.

4. I actually canvassed for a Republican in my first election.
That would be 1963 -- I was 21.

This was in Louisiana, when Louisiana was a one-party state and many Louisiana Democrats were as bad as Republicans anywhere. But then, I had supported Goldwater in 1960 --

I voted for Johnson in '64, partly because my dad was a union business agent and labor was for Johnson, but also, partly, "to keep us out of war." Nevertheless, I considered myself a liberal Republican in the mid-60's -- you know the saying: if you can remember the sixties, you weren't there? I remember them -- Gene McCarthy made me a democrat.
