Truthandhope.org wants to counter Swift Boat for Liars ad and needs help!
Edited on Mon Aug-23-04 11:06 AM by HawkeyeX
Note: Truthandhope.org was first a Dean support group, founded by an ex-Republican Eugene Hedlund. Today, it is a 527/PAC group that will fight for the truth, and here is his letter dated yesterday:

The first ad was bad enough, but I am completely disgusted at the second ad the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth group plans to air this week. It is going up in three battleground states, and we would like to counter it as best we may.

Joani and I will be scripting an ad to counter the swiftvets deceptions, and air it in the same markets as theirs. Although the media coverage has given them a boost in support to the tune of $400,000 a day in donations, any opposing media will be of value, and gives us a shot at earning coverage as well, broader support because of it, and most of all it is the right thing to do.

We would like your help. Naturally, we need financial support, which can be contributed at http://www.truthandhope.org. The more we can raise, the greater the coverage. However, we would also like to hear your ideas. There are many angles which could be taken to script this ad, and we would like to open it up to submission. One ad I would like to see, if it is possible due to time & logistics is the following: A non-actor who supported Bush in 2000 and was on the fence still for the 2004 race, but after watching the swift boat ad was became so sickened at it's content that they will now support John Kerry. If anyone knows of such a person, please let me know asap.

A new article in the Chicago Tribune today by William B. Rood debunks the myths of the swiftboat vets ad. Mr. Rood was there, he was a commander of a Swiftboat, along with John Kerry. Please forward this link to anyone you know who may have been effected by the swiftboat vets ad. This man was there, unlike many of those who contribute to the deceptions of this commercial.

This approach also fits in with the overall message of swaying uncommitted and/or disgruntled Republicans. This sort of tactic is very reminiscent of the 2000 attacks on John McCain. For those of us who supported McCain, it opens old wounds. The new internet ad from the Kerry campaign highlights this fact.

In the mean time, I hope to have something up for mycountryfirst.com within the next couple days.

I deeply appreciate your help, which will probably be asked for more in the future. This campaign is becoming more & more nasty, but it is also becoming clear that those who support Bush will stop at nothing to win. If there was any minute doubt of this fact, it should be erased now. Thus, we must do all we can in the next 10+ weeks to send him back to Crawford, Texas.

Thank you for all that you do,

Eugene Hedlund
