This is a major problem with our press. Of course they don't give the flat earth society say on programs but they do give equally assine groups say. By any rational standard of judgement, the Swift Boat Veterans are liars with an axe to grind. Their specious charges should never have been aired, other than in ads, in the first place. The universal reaction to the ads should have been the offical records and nothing else. The press should have used judgement and actually researched the charges instead of putting on these debates.
They do this all the time. Bush stated his tax cuts benefited the poor. Any fool could tell that was a lie. But instead of the press saying that Bush says this and the numbers say that. They report Bush says this and other people say that.
We don't do this with science and we shouldn't do this with history or math. Facts are facts. Real journalists check their facts.
