It will be a great way to kick off the convention activities.

For those who do not know Mos Def - you should.

He is a prophet for this age and his concert on the Great Lawn at the Delacourt Theater promises to be a soul-stirring political event. His new CD is released next month. He has an Emmy nomination, was in the incredible "Monster's Ball" and does the grooviest musical piece on the Dave Chappelle Show cruising around NYC.

I met Mos a few months ago when I brought my kids to see Tim Robbins' "Embedded" at the Public Theater in NYC. Gracious Progressive guy with a real message of Peace and Justice. He hung out with me and my wife and kids (age 9 and 14) for a few minutes and was the kindest hip celeb I ever met. Autographed a CD for us and said we meet again. I wanta GO!

See you there?

Mos Def Big Band

The Spirit Music Sextet feat. Meshell Ndegeocello

Mos Def explores jazz with the premiere of Mos Def Big Band. Drawing from material by Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Gil-Scott Heron, Beyonce and original compositions, Mos Def and his big band, with musical direction by percussionist Will Calhoun (Black Jack Johnson/Living Colour) explode the boundaries between jazz, soul & hip-hop. Featuring Will Calhoun (drums), Orrin Evans (piano), John Benitez (bass), Wallace Roney (Trumpet), Antoine Roney (Tenor/Saprano Sax), Robin Eubanks (Trombone) and Don Braden (Alto Sax). "Mos Def has proven himself an explorer as well as an eclectic…further development along these lines really would be something to behold--for Mos devotees and open-minded jazz fans alike." -Jazztimes www.mosdefinitely.com

Meshell Ndegeocello, celebrated bassist and Grammy-nominated solo artist, has pulled together some of the best and most creative musicians in the world. Spirit Music. Improvisational sound exploration. New compositions influenced by life, Miles Davis, Kool Herc, Carl Sagan and holyscripture. What jazz and funk originally implied for the future. 11. It's not the Great Lawn, it's the Delacorte Theater
The outdoor theater just south of the Great Lawn where they do Shakespeare in the Park. It is a structure built over the Lagoon with an arena stage and risers seating about 1000 (? - i'm guessing on the size). It has no impact on the grass whatsoever.

4. I love Mos Def
He's intelligent, down to earth and talented. Wish I could be there but, unfortunately, duty calls. No more vacation time for me. Enjoy it all the more for those like me who can't make it.

8. wish I could go!
I have a crush on Mos for all the reasons you talked about in your description of him. I hope this is only the beginning of a long and successful acting career for him, as I would love to see more of him on the big and small screen! :loveya:

I hope you have a great time at the show...if you get to talk to Mos again, let him know he has some loving admirers here at DU!

10. If I was a woman, I would stumble for him
Edited on Thu Aug-19-04 07:29 PM by seventhson
The thing is his message of peace and anti-gangsta bullshit (pro-consciousness raising hip-hop) and improving the mind is just awesome.

He IS the rainbow - which is why I think his show in NYC is a karmic cosmic moment for all the people who are gathering to fight the RNC power (peacefully)

I need a DU T-Shirt for the concert if I go.

12. Oh SNAP! Don't forget about him in Italian Job.
Woot! I am coming to NYC to visit my aunt and cousin for their birthdays. I'll be there for this concert! I have pretty good luck catching good shows while I am there. My lucky streak continues!

13. Trying to make a DU T=Shirt for the event - kickoff to the convention
protest

I hope more NYC DUers will be there.

But knowing about Mos Def is important - he really has "Blessed" written all over him.
