WASHINGTON — U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert has signed a contract to write a book about his life from his days as a high school wrestling coach in Yorkville to his rise in Congress, according to his spokesman and publisher.

Marji Ross, president of Regnery Publishing Inc., said Wednesday negotiations with Hastert began in January but were not concluded until the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct cleared the deal earlier this month. She declined to discuss terms of the contract.

Keeping in line with House ethical standards, the Yorkville Republican will not receive advance payment for the book, which is expected to be published next spring.

"The theme will be lessons in leadership, what he learned and his style of leadership," said Ross, president of the small Washington-based conservative publishing house.

The other day I was leafing through Newsweek when a small article caught my eye. It concerned the possibility of "white-only" dating services. On it's surface, this seems repugnant, but on further reflection I know many people `triage' their dating experiences by certain physical characteristics. Height, weight, hair color, etc., are all markers some men and women use to limit the playing field. Love may be blind, but dating certainly isn't.


This particular dating service goes a little further, however. The Newsweek article is short and so is duplicated in it's entirety below:

This is where things got weird. Not satisfied to merely scoff at the article and shake my head while I downed my morning dose of caffeine, I decided to do a little Googling. You see, the name "Regnery" caught my eye. At one time I was curious as to who published all those Right Wing screed books from the likes of Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, and G. Gordon Liddy. I had noticed the name "Regnery" on the many of the jackets and tucked it into the back of my mind with the purpose of making sure i never bought a book from that publisihing house.

A little internet searching of Mr. William Regnery reveals much. It turns out he is the heir to his father Henry's publishing house, and this apple fell right next to the trunk. A look at the publishing house's website will reveal these little gems for sale:Useful Idiots (about us liberals, of course), Persecution: How Liberals Are Waging War Against Christianity (by Rush's brother David Limbaugh), Goodbye, Good Men (about how we liberals caused the Catholic priests to bugger little boys), and Icons of Evolution, which is about how liberals have hoodwinked the scientific community into a belief in evolution and natural selection.

In addition to dear old Dad, William also has a brother of some notoriety: Alfred Regnery (now the head honcho at Regnery Publishing) served in the Reagan White House under then Attorney General Edwin Meese. He helped draft the now infamous Meese Report on pornography. He resigned from the Reagan White House when a rape accusation at his house led to police discovering a cache of hardcore porn. Not to worry, old Alfie had friends in high places.

When the New York Times questioned Alfred Regnery about Clinton Special Prosecutor Kenneth Starr, he replied: ``I knew Ken Starr when I worked at the Justice Department. I've known him since 1981, when I was a deputy assistant attorney general and he was a special assistant to the Attorney General, William French Smith. We're friends.''


Curiouser and curiouser

Ahhhh what a tangled web. William Regnery, brother to Alfred, just wants to preserve the white way of life. He wants white women, and he is tired of all the race mixing. His Occidental Quarterly has a very nice "Statement of Principles" that any good Right Wing nut would be proud to call his own: (excerpted with my emphasis):


The West is a cultural compound of our Classical, Christian, and Germanic past.

Race informs culture; it is the necessary precondition for cultural identity and integrity... In the United States, whites are projected to become a minority of the national population in less than fifty years. The result will impoverish not only their descendants but the world in general and will jeopardize the civilization and free governments that whites have created.

America is part of the West...is not "based on a creed" or "derived from a proposition." America is neither a "universal nation" nor an "experiment" concocted by ideologues. America is the unique and irreplaceable product of centuries of specific racial, historical, and cultural identities...

The European identity of the United States and its people should be maintained. Immigration into the United States should be restricted to selected people of European ancestry.

The perfectibility, let alone the equality, of man is not possible and is not a legitimate political aspiration. Political efforts to achieve or enforce perfectibility and equality invariably demand an unacceptable degree of coercion and result in unnecessary and unjust pain, suffering, and social disorder.

The political and personal freedoms of the American order--including our rights of free expression and association--are in jeopardy from ethnic and ideological enemies and must be preserved.

As I said, this is a bit of a long and meandering post. The Regnery family is certainly not the mainstream of American political thought (nor, I hope, even the mainstream of American Conservative thought), but they do represent a little look at the dark underbelly that has become the American Right Wing. These people are bigots and they have a lot of money. They are pushing their agenda and trying to redefine America in a way that bears close scrutiny.

Many posts ago, I was taken to task for comparing Shrubby to Hitler. Indeed, I think he is not Hitler, and that the Fuhrer is in a class unto himself. I still maintain, however, that the greatest evil of Nazi Germany was that an entire populace that was well informed and educated allowed themselves to be influenced, bought, and cajoled into supporting the most evil government the world has ever seen. I get the feeling that the Regnery family would not have been among the German resistance.

From her "undisclosed location", that is. Because she obviously was never killed on a plane that never went anywhere near the Pentagon. Maybe she dumped Ted for L. Ron Hubbard and they can both release books from "beyond the grave".
