Anyone else think that the GOP will support keeping Davis now?
A new poll I saw yesterday from the LA TImes has Cruz leading Arnold by 13% - 35% to 22%. It is becoming very apparent that one of two things will happen on October 8.

Either:
a) Davis wins the recall; stays governor.
b) Davis loses the recall; Bustemante becomes the governor.

Either way a Democrat will be governor.

Isn't it possible that the GOP may dump Arnold and vote to oppose the recall to keep the unpopular guy in?

Just a thought. What do you all think?

1. NO!
Republicans cannot accept defeat. it's not in them. when they lose the Election, they will simply take it like they tke all other things.

2. Why would they do that?
Anything is possible I guess. But changing gears and opposing the recall now would make them look like the horses asses they really are. Not in their nature to be so up front about it.

And they will NEVER admit they made a mistake. NEVER!

5. Its an interesting question, because
if an unpopular Governor - stays Governor - it might be easier for a "takeover" in 2006. In 2004, the reasoning could follow, that CA voters may be even more angry and dissillusioned with Davis (and Dems) and might express that anger at the voting booth in terms of state legislators (house and senate) - in order to nuetralize Davis - which would improve the possibility of pulling those voters to the top of the ticket for Bush.

But, if a new Governor takes over - and has a chance to do better and grow in popularity - then the 'anger factor' could be lessened by '04 - and it would be harder to parley 'state level' anger/frustration towards the governor into turnout for local races (state house and senate) which would be needed to try to get voters out for Bush at the top of the ticket.

I hadn't really thought about this until the poster started the thread. I have to agree that the RNC these days is about unbridled arrogance and power grabs, and their long term strategic thinking seems to be accordingly muddled. That said, I don't see them taking this approach.

It is, even if more academic than anything else, an interesting thought.

6. Yes, that's all true, officially...
But if it becomes apparent that Bustamante would win if the recall went through, do you think enough of the haters will vote Davis just to keep a white guy in office? They'll certainly think about it...

I guarantee ya SOME will, whether it's a big enough portion or not is another matter. Truly, the thuglike protomasculine mania to NEVER admit a mistake is rife in that crowd, but will they have the sense to play it sensibly and declare a victory even if Bustamante is elected?

I do so relish the thought that their nasty Coup d'Etat could blow up in their faces. If it does, their noses must be rubbed in it endlessly, and it needs to be held up high as an example of the vulnerability of this mob.

3. no - they'll try to force the other repubs out
Simon already folded. if they can get McClintock to quit also, it'll put Arnie in a much stronger position. the GOP split can't be taken for granted.

4. Cannibalism all the way.
It sucks to be a Republican in California. Vote for someone who is supposedly as liberal as Bill Clinton and win, or vote for an actual Republican and lose.

They really fucked this up.

7. You nailed it.
Isn't it great? The Pubs here are desparate and it's showing. I think we have a real shot at keeping the statehouse. Anything to keep the Bushies out of here in 2004. I don't think I could stand the Shrubbery Summer 2004 Tour. :puke:

We MUST get out the vote.

8. Letter to the LA Times
Where Are Credentials of Schwarzenegger?

I am fairly well known in my profession and have accumulated some wealth in my 61 years. I think I'll run for movie star. I will, of course, start at the top — a male-action-hero leading man. Why not? When the producer asks for my acting credentials, I won't have any. When the director says I need to hit my marks, I will probably beat up my Groucho doll. When the director says, "Cut," I will look for scissors.

Who cares about experience, knowledge, ability to understand, background? What do you think this is, some important governmental leadership position? All I have to do is memorize a script — you know, something someone else has written for me to say, and appear on the big screen. The rest will follow, and I will be a star. If you believe that, I know someone you can vote for, for governor.

Michael H. Miller
