Why is the Deficit not the number one issue in America?
Edited on Thu Aug-12-04 05:45 PM by Bandit
We are currently paying more in interest on the debt than we do for the Defense Budget, and that is with rates being the lowest in a half century. What if rates suddenly go up to say eight percent. We would be paying twice as much as the Defense Budget and getting nothing. We should be paying down the debt not adding to it. Right now we are adding to the debt by twenty thousand dollars a second. This is a huge issue that no one wants to talk about. We need to talk about it. America could do wonders if we were debt free. We need some fiscal responsibility desperately.

1. It sure would be if a Democrat was in office.

2. This is a recurring tactic
You don't need to convince people not to be concerned with the deficit. You just need to convince people that nobody else is concerned with the deficit. People just don't talk to each other that much (and in the case of actual communities like this one it's easy to dismiss us as a bunch of librul loony tunes).

Since the media is nothing more than glorified PR department for the ruling class it's easy to invert the important and unimportant issues. They just spread the concept that *you're* the only one concerned about the important stuff, and everyone else is worried about things like those pesky queers.

7. Because it has really good competition this time.
With wars (plural, for god's sake), governmental felonies, potential treason, erosion of liberties, ignoring of constitutional law, diplomatic isolation, oil issues, an economy desperately treading water, real terror issues unaddressed, and the strip mining of the treasury we have actually a lot on our plate to choose from.

you must forgive us if we can't freak out about the deficit to the isolation of any other issue.

but you can never forgive the media for ignoring *all of this* to the isolation of celebrity lawsuits.

9. Lots of VERY important issues are non-issues

now. My dad was just telling me about the book "the third chimpanzee" by Pulitzer prize winner, historian and naturalist Jared Diamond. He believes that our mistreatment of our environment will bring an end to humanity BEFORE 2050! That jives with a recent scientific report that stated last year that ALL natural resources would be consumed by 2050 AT CURRENT CONSUMPTION RATES. With the population doubling every 12 years, that speeds things up quite a bit. We're all consumed with consuming, celebrities, gay marriage and other piffles that mean nothing in the face of our imminent extinction. But this isn't an issue because knowledge might cause consumers to consume less, and our corporate masters would rather see us perish in the near future that deal with an immediate drop in profits.

10. I agree with you a hundred percent but the best way to address
those issues is to have our house in order so we can spend where needed. The whole world can't just quit consuming without assistance. The only way we can give assistance is with money. Money for Science and Research and for Mitigation for the world.

12. because it's almost invisible
the only way it could be visible is if it were hurting the economy, and we usually blame that on other things.
