"If you were not yet aware, Howard Dean is at Dartmouth this summer for two days each month as a distinguished visiting fellow through the Rockefeller Center. During his first two visits, he has already given a number of lectures to classes ranging from engineering to psychology, as well as participated in several faculty discussions and student dinners. As a young liberal Dean devotee and campaign worker for his primary run, I was ecstatic at the news of his arrival on campus and especially excited to have the chance to spend some time with a person that I have been waxing poetically about for months but never actually met firsthand...."
SNIP..." I don’t know if Howard Dean was that confident in my driving abilities either. During the Q&A part of the discussion, a student asked the Governor if he still had Secret Service officers with him. Her friend answered exasperated, “Why would he have Secret Service officers if he doesn’t even have a real chauffeur!” At that comment, Dean turned toward me and with a probing look of fear mixed with optimism that I wouldn’t kill him, and replied, “Well… I hope I do!"
SNIP..."I asked Dean if he had any regrets—a loaded question, but a valid one. His answer was an unwavering “no.” He believes that his candidacy changed this election with his emphasis on grassroots support, overwhelming youth participation, and finally making the other democratic candidates take a stand...."
SNIP..."Our time wrapped up quickly, and we were soon (safely) at his driveway. I suppose that I expected something more impressive, but his two-story house seemed perfect for the candidate who has always emphasized that politics begin at home. Dean invited me in, and I was treated with the utmost hospitality by his wife Judith, who handed me a fudgsicle and asked me to sit down at the kitchen table and talk. There I spent the next twenty minutes discussing Dartmouth in the summertime, my thoughts on the D-plan vs. the semester system, and what I thought about Healthy Choice fudgsicles with a presidential candidate and his wife, who has always been (falsely) depicted by the media as too busy to care for her husband’s campaign. Wow. ...."END SNIPs
