So I get the "Heinz Outsourcing" e-mail last night...
Edited on Mon Aug-09-04 10:11 AM by Richardo
...which was thoroughly debunked by snopes.com. I "Reply All" to the entire mailing list telling them so and providing the link to snopes. http://www.snopes.com/politics/kerry/heinz.asp

In just had to share the response I got from one of the addressees... a complete non-sequitor:

"I appreciate your take, (Richardo), but she's no Laura Bush." :wtf:

Of course I'm thinking "Thank God she's not." But really, WTF?

Demolish the "facts", they respond with ad-hominem non-sequitors. (This is NO surprise to anyone, but it never ceases to amuse, amaze and confound me.) I can't imagine what it must be like to have such a tenuous hold on your beliefs that you can't articulate a better argument than that.

I'm SO glad to be with the 'elite intelligentsia'...

1. But that's the problem with Kerry, he's SO elite and intelligent
he doesn't represent the average, moronic, uninformed, apathetic American...

2. That's when I would have replied. . . .
"You're right, she's no Laura Bush, she never killed anyone with her car."

4. "...she never killed anyone with her car."
That one leaves you wide open to Ted Kennedy references.

8. We're not talking about Ted Kennedy, we're talking about . . .
a First "Lady" and a potential First Lady. One raised two daughters who like to get falling down drunk in front of the cameras and stick their tongues out at photographers, and one raised daughters that are extremely eloquent and who know how to present themselves in public.

6. Yeah, that has always smelled to high heaven.
So improbable, unless you are a big Casablanca fan.

3. As to the Laura Bush comment, you should provide the
link of the articles regarding the death of her high school boyfriend who died when lb ran that stop sign.

7. Here's another good link to reply all on the email
http://factcheck.org/article.aspx?docID=224

"Summary

False allegations about Kerry's wife have been circulating for months, but the velocity of the Internet "whispering campaign" picked up substantially with the approach of the Fall campaign.

One false message claims Teresa Heinz Kerry gave $4 million to a foundation that used the funds to support a list of "radical" groups including one with alleged links to Hamas and another that is said to have offered to provide a lawyer for Saddam Hussein. But public records show otherwise. Heinz Kerry's foundation money was directed to projects such as "Sustainable Pittsburgh," which promotes "smart growth" strategies.

Another widely circulated e-mail claims Kerry and his wife "own" dozens of H.J. Heinz Company factories in Europe and Asia. It accuses Kerry of hypocrisy for denouncing offshoring of US jobs while "making millions off that cheap labor."

That's also false: neither of them own Heinz. Public records show Heinz Kerry isn't an officer of the company, isn't on the company's board of directors, and isn't even close to being the largest shareholder. The Heinz Endowments do own Heinz stock -- less than 4% of the company -- but income from that stock goes to charity, not to the Kerrys personally." <snip>

Good luck though. My Dad had already forwarded the email to me (included with his email group of friends/family that he uses for these purposes). I'd replyall'd with the Snopes link. No responses from anyone so far, except my Dad. Then, I sent just my Dad the factcheck.org link in a vain but hopeful intent of trying to get him to check his facts before becoming an uninformed, complicit dope of these whispering campaigns. No such luck though...here was his response to factcheck.org's info:

"Maybe this was incorrect but outfits like the Iraq Peace Fund and Strategies certainly do not help matters with its philosophy. Of course, it fits in with kerry's no leadership concept of letting terrorists possibly kill a half million people and then we'll go after them. Talk about convoluted thinking.
Dad

P.S., interesting that they talk about 8.1 million yet show three operations with a total of 4.0 million. Where's the the other half?
P.P.S., yes I did read it."

I told him to take me out of his email group for these things and that I'm voting for Kerry.

10. Besides, all you have to do to know it's bullshit...
...is open your refrigerator. Check the labels. Importing/exporting things like ketchup across oceans is problematic, so Heinz does the same thing Coca-Cola does - produce the stuff where it's consumed.

12. Use the Skeleton Closet!!!
Its at www.realchange.org and it is fabulous! Its got lots of nifty Clinton stuff for those who like "fair and balanced" and you can copy the stuff from Bush to make yourself feel better. Do one last "reply all" to his group with the information -- it will make you feel better! :) Best, Ida

9. I honestly think Bush has the "stupid" vote.
Every time I get into a discussion with one of his supporters, they either have no reading comprehension, or they make illogical and self-contradictory arguments, or they just spew hatred, or whatever. I've yet to meet a well-informed, intelligent, courteous Bush supporter.

He's got the "stupid" vote, and the "asshole" vote. If that's enough to win, I'l be very depressed.
