Mary K. Letourneau's dad was a Republican Senator
Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 11:44 AM by VoteDemocratic2004
I was watching the story about her life on MSNBC Headliners & Legends and they said that her father was an ex Senator by the name of Smith.

He lost his seat because he fathered two kids by another woman and he ran of the family values ticket.

He was also a pervert but none of the channels have mentioned that he was a member of the GOP.

Can you imagine if her dad would have been a democrat what would have happened with the Mary K. Letourneau story?

Wow....who would have ever thought that she was a member of the GOP.... :eyes:

I just did a google search and all of the links to the stories about her Dad have been killed . There was a story about her Dad being a pedifile one time but I didn't know that he was a GOP Senator.

1. I thought it was Schmitz (sp?)
and he was to the far-right of the John Birch Society.

Scary.

2. Yes, he was
Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 11:46 AM by JohnKleeb
and he was a state senator and US representive, never a real senator. He ran for president I believe in 1972, a real genuine sleaze ball. Those John Birchers are nut cases, but Ive heard John Schmitz was too right for them even, and Ive read about their views in an old book that was in the school library and they are freaky, almost up there with the KKK. oh and btw thanks for that help last night.

Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 11:47 AM by VoteDemocratic2004
I think that the GOP is trying to kill this story by spelling is Smith instead of Schmitz?

6. Do you remember hearing about him being a pedophile?
I do but I can't find the story.

Isn't it funny about how it's never mentioned on the "news" about him being a right wing senator who ran on the family values platform.

7. no I never heard about that
I heard he had a German mistress that he fathered children with though. I do hear about him being a right wing zealot but only on the true crime docus that Ive seen on Mary Kay Leterenou.

10. Thanks for the information about his name
During her trial faze they said that she was abused as a child and that her father had done the same thing with an under-aged girl.

Out of curiosity I am trying to find the story but my guess it's been killed.

I wish that we could look at the court transcripts and see how much family values this man believed in :eyes:

15. The whole dynamic in the family probably was weird
Each person playing his or her part in the weirdness, like a psychodrama or something.

Hard to say, but something had to be wrong for all this weirdness to start.

I wonder how MKL siblings are?

25. right
You know I read in that biography that he had Yasser Arafat by his side when he ran for senate, kind of funny that some of the old right were very pro palestine, I think mostly because of anti semtism, as for me and I/P, I am netural but I favor a Palestian state, etc, the basics. I have to wonder what her grandparents were like, maybe American supporters of Hitler, because Schmitz seemed to be an anti semitic bastard as well, they were Catholic so I dont see a KKK connection.

But, if that boy is an adult now he should be able to make his own choice of whether he wants to be with her or not.

14. Look for a paperback title called If Loving You is Wrong by G. Olsen
Some of the story is in there.

There was also some question of incest in the family between Mary Kay and her brother(s)...

13. True, he had an affair with one of his students and fathered her
child. It is believed by some to be partly the cause of MKL's dysfunctional personality.

What amazes me is that he ran on the family values ticket :eyes:

Don't all of the hypocrite GOP party members run on the family values ticket?

How can they keep running of the family values ticket and be hypocrites at the same time?

I do remember an incest story but by now it's been killed.

22. Schmitz was a member of the Birch Society
It was no secret. He was proud of it.

In 1972, he ran for President in the general election as a third-party candidate. Schmitz was incensed at Nixon's trip to China.

He died in 2000.

17. John G. Schmitz
In June of 1970, still in the state Senate, Schmitz won a special election to fill the seat left vacant by the reactionary Rep. James B. Utt who had died in office. He won the regular 1970 election as well, and moved his family to Washington. His tiny reactionary stone created barely a ripple in the great pond of Congress. His politics alienated even his most prominent constituent, President Richard Nixon, of San Clemente, CA. When Nixon went to China Schmitz quipped, “I have no objection to President Nixon going to China. I just object to his coming back.” This didn’t just sink him in the eyes of Nixon and the Republican party; his own constituents abandoned him, and Schmitz was not nominated to run for the house seat in 1972.

<SNIP>

In a scandal that broke years later, Mary Kay LeTourneau, the notorious Seattle schoolteacher who bore two babies with a young teenage student, turned out to be Schmitz’s daughter. Her boy lover, a Samoan, was said to be mature for his years; perhaps he had been reading that arch-liberal Margaret Mead on his own customs. “Can’t you understand that this is not a story about me,” an unrepentant LeTourneau told George magazine. “It’s a story of two remarkable men.” Those would be her thirteen-year-old student and her domineering father, both of whom LeTourneau loved beyond reason. Schmitz researched the Samoan treaty to see if there was something in it that could save her from prison. There wasn’t.
