How do you deal with not hating those who hate you?
I love it here at DU because for the most part people are very accepting. But that's certainly not the case within a lot of the U.S. I hear an incredible amount of hate directed at hispanics. I'm not advocating illegal immigration, but geez, how easily we forget. Many of those people who HATE the immigrants were immigrants themselves. It's not just hispanics though, it's really any minority. I think at this moment I think the group that has it worst has got to be gay community. I get so angry and it's so hard to stave off hatred, how do others deal with it?

2. For me, it's my community
Specifically, my church community. We talk a LOT about being open and accepting, affirming of persons wherever they are in their walk. It's definitely not easy, and if I didn't have the support of my church family, I wouldn't be able to deal with it effectively.

Others might have some other social group, but for me, it's definitely my church home.

4. I've been telling them how stupid they are for years.
If they don't like it, too bad. And sometimes I even get'em to think!

Otherwise, I just shake my head in disbelief, hold my tongue and wonder if there's intelligent life on Earth.

5. It's not really their fault
After all most Republicans have a below average IQ.

6. I remind myself, when it comes to immigrants..
.. that my family immigrated here once, too. That is the American Dream. Just because our country has decided that it's okay for some people to immigrate here, and for others it's a crime, is not my decision. One side of my family were the original immigrants here. The other side of my family came here in the 20's from Europe. What's the difference between them and those seeking a better life south of our border now?? Nothing but laws.

I imagine I'm hated, in a generic.. non personal fashion, for my political beliefs... but it doesn't affect me daily. Someone will always disagree with you at some point in life. YOu just be the best person you can be, and continue to live as though the haters don't exist. If you succumb to the anger, they win.

7. Try to be less judgemental and more caring.
Judging others is always a way to cause discord. Mexicans as a rule are actually everything the GOP says they espouse. Strong on Famiily Values and very hard workers who actually do pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Republicans are just plain hypocrites on virtually every single topic.

8. the hate is theirs to feed and fester and experience
and their hate of you is a creation in their mind, their darkness that has nothing to do with you, unless you too want to experience it with them. then you are in the game. in knowing it has nothing to do with you, you have opportunity of not feeding into

people hate out of fear. fear is creation and illusion not even real. to hate hispanic is to fear lack of job lack of material. that is sad for them to live not in abundance

hate of mexican is a lack of knowledge understanding or participation in the hispanic culture. the inability to embrace the riches of the culture

my discrimination is the hate of women, and that i understand for whatever reason the male is in fear of female. now reality, that is sad. so not hard for me to not take personally.

9. Empathy...............
putting yourself in their position and trying to understand what events in their lives led them to be the way they are.

This is a trait that no Republican has in my opinion.

10. Hate comes from either fear or ignorance
Therefore, you actually have to have compassion for those who hate. Hating them back will only cause more harm, especially to you.
Hatred is not something you want to carry around with you. I truly believe a lot of cancer and other diseases are caused by people carrying bitterness, fear, and hatred.

A good experiment would be to eradicate all the hatred, and see if people would live longer.

Just a little Saturday wishful thinking

11. It's their loss...
Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 12:03 PM by SuffragetteSal
they lose out on knowing someone smart, funny and fun to be around. They lose, we don't.

Since moving to my new northern state I have been called a 'Mexican' more times than I can count. At first I said I'm not, but now I just say nothing. I am an American who happens to have Portuguese American and Italian American grandparents...not even the same continent!

What was that story when Bush first got in and he thought his Mexico travel was 'going overseas'. LOL.

12. Hate is toxic bad strategy. Let the opponents froth, then zing them
Hate and anger are toxic emotions, injurious to your health. Don't indulge.

"A violent mind wields a careless sword." -- Miyamoto Musashi, the great samurai warrior.

Let your opponents froth and foam at the mouth. When their energy is ebbing, zing them with a well placed non-personal barb.

For example, if they complain about activist judges, mumble and tilt your head to encourage more foaming, and then say something like, "ah yes, activist judges are no good, like the five activist judges that selected Bush in 2000". Then let them froth about that.

Always keep it non-personal, and give them room to back down. If they back down, never say "I told you so" or other triumphalism. Stick to facts and always remain calm.

In the long run, you will get great respect because you listened and didn't make personal attacks. That is the best way to get them to listen to you.
