Gas prices in Ok down today, $1.65. Oil co. manipulation?
Edited on Fri Aug-06-04 07:22 PM by bginok
Would they keep gas prices artificially low to keep
shrub's numbers up in non-swing states?
Weigh in with your numbers if it seems this is
happening elsewhere.

1. Yeah, I'm confused. They were at $2 per gallon at $40 per barrel and
now we are almost at $45 (I'm not sure the latest #'s) and it's lower.

Why? (other than the obvious political motivation of oil companies).

2. I think it's a good bet gas prices could stay stable
until the election to try to give shrub a boost.

It's too late though. If we keep working hard and spreading the word,
Shrub's lies and misleads are going to catch up to him.

3. but...but....but....gas prices are market driven.
yeah, right. The oil companies have taken lots of profits
this summer, they can afford a little less profit for a few months.

7. Prices are about to explode
Oil prices ar over 44$ a barrell now (they had "dropped to 40$). It takes a little time for those prices to work their way to the pump, but it's coming, just in time for the Labor Day holiday.

9. Gas dropped 7 cents yesterday near me in N.C.
I thought it was strange that when I went to a meeting last night at 6pm gas was $1.87 but it had dropped to $1.80 when I passed the station 2 hours later. There was a news item yesterday about gas stockpiles being higher. But schools begin starting back next week and gas usually falls at end of the summer driving season so that may have something to do with it. Unfortunately though, in two months we will be worrying about heating fuel costs going through the roof.

11. You are right about the end of the driving season and about heating oil.
Here is the chart for the price of heating oil. The spike in early 2003 was the lead up to the invasion of Iraq.

Here is the chart for the price of gasoline.

10. OK Gas Prices
If people truly understood what a very few individuals can do to manipulate gasoline prices in Oklahoma, they'd probably keel over dead from rage. Or at least, they should, given the fury I've seen on some people's faces when complaining about the price of gas to some random clerk in a convenience store who has absolutely no control over any of it.

I have personally witnessed the actions of one man resulting in a ten cent overnight jump in gasoline prices across the entire OKC metro. This had nothing to do with the market and everything to do with cooking the books prior to the distribution of bonuses to certain executives.

I'm no longer on the inside of the kind of business where this information is readily accessible to those who pay attention, so I don't know what's causing the current trend. Based on past experience, though, I would suggest the current drop is temporary and serves an accounting purpose. I know this sounds counter-intuitive, but today's drop will eventually result in an increased profit margin for two or three OK companies.

Watch stations that sell Conoco gas, and you'll know which way the wind is blowing. (That doesn't mean just Conoco stations, rather those that purchase gas from the Conoco distribution rack. Many of these don't have the company label and even have the gasoline delivered via a third company.)
