13. What's ABC News NOW?
Do they have a news channel?

I don't think I could trust them either. Their news has wandered over to the dark side at times too.

I keep saying I wish CBS had a news channel. At least they still do real journalism ('Early Show' aside).

14. It's ABC's All-News Channel...
not on many cable systems yet, but is available on satellite systems. Also, I get it here on my HDTV...it's a "sub-channel" of the Chicago ABC affiliate...and I figure they should have it available that way in other major markets.

It's like the World News Now format that's been running over night for years. Actually still a very good Newscast to watch. I was hooked on it in the early 90's when Aaron Brown was the anchor and every Thursday night featured the "World News Polka". Not quite that off-beat now, but from what I've seen, it's straight up headlines and recaps of reports on other ABC News shows. If you missed Nightline or 20/20, here's where you can see the excerpts.

If you have cable, call your company...find out if it's available or put in your request for it (in place of CNNservative...LOL). They may have a digital cable package with it already (with other channels like BBC and NWI) that offer a far different view of the news.

Cheers!

15. It's another cable news channel..
I just got it recently. It's an mixture of what was on 20/20, Nightline, and ABC News. It's been pretty layed back so far and I like the format. I have yet to form concrete opinions so I will keep you posted... :)

4. Welcome
I stopped watching CNN and the rest of cable shortly after the 2000 election when they ignored Bush's theft of the election and lied, lied, lied. You can get all the information you need on the internet, from books -- don't forget your local library. (Get them to order pro-Kerry books if you can.)

The broadcast media is just one-way communication. They talk at us, but they don't listen to us. Our first step in getting a chance to be heard is to let the media know we have stopped listening to them because they are not listening to us.

17. Agreed!
They are becoming more irrelevant. Actually, I suppose they are gonig after more and more niche audiences, and so become more extreme.

7. Disarming the media
Edited on Tue Aug-03-04 01:47 PM by KurtNYC
I encourage anyone who has spent time and effort writing or calling media entities to consider the following strategy. Rather than trying to get the corporate owned media to blow the whistle on themselves and their friends (highly unlikely), simply help expose them for the totally biased, self serving, Bush loving whores that they are.

If you think that "journalists" (if we can call them all that) are not telling the truth because they are "lazy", then we aren't understanding this the same way. These people work for Ruppert Murdoch and similar lesser know billioniares. They get memoes from Dick Cheney's office telling them what they have done "wrong." Influence over the media is not strictly on which headlines should appear, which stories should NOT be covered and which stories should dissappear. It extends to the actual "tone of voice" in which stories are read! The media is a weapon and people like Robert Novak are the mercenaries.

We're dealing with people who put an awful lot of stock in psychological warfare. Which, within this country, is carried out by the mainstream media.

If you think I am stretching this too far, I encourage you to browse over these two items. The first is a leaked collection of internal memoes from John Moody, the Director of Fox News Channel to staff. Particularly abhorrant in this batch are lines like, regarding Iraq:

Do not fall into the easy trap of mourning the loss of US lives and asking out loud why are we there?

I think you will see that pragmatic politics is trumping any sense of REALLY supporting the troops.

http://www.wonkette.com/archives/fox-news-memos-the-who...

The second includes this eye opener from Michael Moore:

You know. I was on a, one of those morning talk shows and after we went to commercial, the person who was interviewing me said you know, you know, you are right, I mean when the war started, it was very difficult here to book the people we wanted to book, ask the questions we wanted to ask. In fact, I got a memo about my tone of voice. And apparently the brass had received a call from the Dick Cheney’s office is what--and said that he didn't like my tone of voice. And I got a memo on it to watch my tone of voice. Well you've got to tell that story! You've got to tell that story. I can't. Well why? They can't fire you. You are like one of the most well-known people in America. And, you know, you've got to tell this story. If you don’t tell it, I’m going to wait like maybe another week. What's today? Within the week, I will put this on my web site. I'll tell the whole story and I’ll name who said it. (applause) so this person is unnoticed now and I am doing it in a friendly way. Because this is a good person. You know? Just that I think the people deserve the truth and they need to know how the decisions get made behind the curtain. Who is pulling the strings here?

The whole bit is here: http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/index.php?id=113

The way to start defanging this beast is to expose them for what they are. The more propaganda is seen as propaganda (and NOT in any sense OBJECTIVE "news") the less effective it is.

The media's back is to the wall now that Bush's poll numbers are too low for him to be legally elected in November. They will be forced to go to the greatest lengths to try and stop the inevitable. Now is the time to expose them and damage their credibility as much as possible!

(or should that be 'help them damage their own credibility'?)

8. I wrote CNN
a farwell letter too! I mailed it yesterday, telling them that since they don't bother to respond to my e-mails, maybe they will pay attention to a handwritten letter. Probably not, but I feel good doing it.

12. I haven't watched CNN all year
I gave them up shortly after the Iraq invasion. I don't watch any of the cable 'news' channels anymore, instead prefering a mixture of CBS, BBC and Democracy Now.

I doubt I'll be watching any of the cable 'news' channels until they go through a change of management and shape up. As they stand now, watching them is a complete waste of time. Too much opinion -- almost no information.

16. If you have Dish Network, tune in to FSTV and, more importantly
cut them a small check. If people actually supported Free Speech TV, they could put on even better programming than they now have. I think viewer-sponsored television is an alternative to the corporate media whose time has come. Even if they can't present the same glossy programming as CNN, Fux, or BSNBC, they can make up for it with dedication and intelligence. Amy Goodman's show on FSTV, "Democracy Now!" alone makes it worth support from all of us. Here's a link to today's programming on FSTV:
