Andrea Yates' husband files for divorce

The husband of Andrea Yates, the Clear Lake area woman who admitted to drowning her five children in the family's bathtub three years ago, has filed for divorce.

SNIP

"Andrea knew this was coming. She had been aware of it for some time. I don't think Rusty would pull this on her unexpectedly. And there's no questioning the fact that he still cares deeply for Andrea," said Parnham, who is handling Yates' criminal appeal.

Parnham questioned the timing of the divorce request on the heels of the three-year anniversary of the children's deaths.

"I'm not sure that this was the most appropriate time for Rusty to do this," he said. "Then again there's probably not any most appropriate time."

SNIP
The article then mentions her recent hospitalization and refusal to eat. Nothing about Rusty Yates' future plans.

1. He should be sterilized
No woman should ever again be sujected to his lack of support as husband and father.

3. He probably already found someone else. What a loser.

So much for those fundamentalist Christian family values. I give him less than five years to remarry and start a whole new family again, and he and wife #2 will appear on all the ladies magazines of how he found true love again.

8. Oh yeah. He had her home school.
>>“stay-at-home mom” and home-school teacher; well-scrubbed, neatly dressed, smiling children—a tribute to “traditional family values,” as envisioned by the Christian right.

4. Exactly! He simply refused
to deal with what was happening to her, or to give her any breathing room at all. He insisted on more children, even when she said she couldn't handle it anymore. He ignored her difficulties in caring for the children that last year. When she was hospitalized a few months before the tragedy and the psychiatrist wanted to admit her for inpatient treatment, he refused, claiming there was no need for it because there was nothing wrong with her. He wanted his maid, cook, and nanny, I guess. He believed it was "woman's duty" to give her life over to popping out baby after baby and chaining herself to the inside of the house. She wanted a career, he put the kibosh on that pronto. You can see the emptiness in her eyes in pictures taken of her that last year. He had many indications of trouble those last several months, and completely ignored them. In my eyes, he's even more guilty than Andrea herself.

2. I never liked this guy, and this is not surprising
He insisted on having another child knowing her mental status was suspect and then accepted no blame in the outcome- blamed everyone else but himself. Now, he abandons her. What a nice guy. *Sarcasm off*

9. He should be ostracized
Had it been him that had "done the deed" Andrea would have likely "stood by her man"....

Anyway, he should be classified as damaged goods and hardly marriage material. Folks in Houston, can you bring that on?

7. I hope she feels relieved.
Really, the woman has to be so remorseful now and who needs him around. I hope no other nice Christian woman wants to breed with him. My opinion.

11. He makes $$$ at NASA - a fundie lady's catch!!!
Edited on Mon Aug-02-04 10:11 PM by fortyfeetunder
I can't remember his profession (think it was computer programmer) but he can't be hurting for money now, less the mouths to feed. The article said at the time of the event he was making $80,000/year. That is solidly middle class in TX!

He probably has already found another good fundamentalist Christian woman ready to be subservient to him and bear a new set of Yates kids....See it in the news...give less than 5 years.

10. I'm shocked--SHOCKED!!!
Edited on Mon Aug-02-04 10:11 PM by rocknation
He's fulfilled his period of mourning--time to get on with his life with a new super-Christian wife he'll knock up once a year until he fields a "baseball team." Here's hoping that he picks someone who won't have such a serious history of depression that their doctor orders Russell not knock her up anymore!
