Get ready for the new era of "Ownership"
"In a half-hour address to 7,000 Republican donors, Bush promised a "new era of ownership" that would give Americans more control over their health insurance and savings plans and make healthcare less expensive. Though he offered few specifics, it was the president's strongest suggestion yet that he would forge ahead with a plan to create private retirement savings and health accounts."

"During the next four years, we'll help more citizens to own their health plan, to own a piece of their retirement, to own their own home or their own small business," Bush said. "We'll usher in a new era of ownership in America with an agenda to help all our citizens save and build and invest so every person owns a part of the American dream."

Translated: "Cube rats, we can't outsource you, so we're going to stop paying for your health insurance"

Or as Jackpine Radical put it: "Owning your own health insurance is like owning your own black hole."

2. Do you have a link to that speech?. I need it for a speech I'm
giving on health care this Wednesday. I like Jackpine's black hole metaphor too. Do you have a link to where he said it?

Thanks for any help. It's most appreciated.

3. Yeah, you'll be 'owning' your own cancer
Which you can treat with aspirin if you choose. Or maybe cinnamon, if that's what you prefer.

4. Every man for himself...
While the rich will get richer, the poor will get poorer.

Let me tell you that my husband and I are in that new era of ownership. My husband lost his job two years ago and decided that he should try to have his own business. He has done okay-- not great, but we're not starving (no extras, just making it). Anyway, we tried to get our own insurance, but because my husband takes steroids for his asthma, no one would be willing to give us insurance. If this is the kind of ownership Bush* is talking about then he is dumber than I ever thought.

8. Anyway, we tried to get our own insurance
Steroids are pretty serious medicine... have you ever examined other avenues to "treat" his condition... or at least reduce his need for steroids?? There are some very safe methods... I guarantee it.

This is only a tiny bit of info... you can track down much more if you so choose.... good luck.

>>According to A. Seaton, et al., in Thorax, the substantial increase in the rate of asthma over the past 20 years can be partially explained by looking at the reduced dietary intake of antioxidant nutrients like beta-carotene and vitamins A, C, and E, as well as the mineral co-factors essential for antioxidant defense mechanisms, including zinc, selenium, and copper. Antioxidants:', are thought to provide important defense mechanisms for maintaining the health of the lung. This protection is significant because decreased antioxidative protection can both stimulate bronchoconstriction and increase immune system hyperactivity (i.e., an allergic reaction) to other agents. Asthma appears to be another disease process that is influenced greatly by antioxidative mechanisms.

Vitamin C and asthma. Especially important to the health of the lungs is vitamin C, inasmuch as it is the major antioxidant substance present in the lining of the airway surfaces, notes G.E. Hatch in an article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Vitamin C intake in the general population appears to correlate with the incidence of asthma. In other words, when vitamin C intake is low, the rate of asthma is high. This association indicates that low vitamin C (in the diet and the blood) is an independent risk factor for asthma. Additional support for this theory can be seen as the symptoms of ongoing asthma in adults appear to be increased by exposure to environmental free radicals and decreased by vitamin C supplementation, say S.O. Olusi, et al., in an article in the Annals of Allergy.<<

10. your own health insurance
This is a constant topic of discussion on the freelancers' list. A lot of people simply can't buy health insurance, and others are $700 or $1,000 a month. Mine in Pennsylvania is $230/month but has a $1,500 deductible and a 20% copay. This country so needs a single-payer national plan.

He's done nothing but damage for the last four years - why would anyone think the next four would be any better?

13. Healthcare needs reform, but what haven't they fucked up
in the last four years.

OBL determined to attach in the U.S. Oops, let that one slip by the goalie.

Tax cuts will stimulate the economy. Of those making over $200,000 a year.

Afghanistan, looked like it was going OK, but we kind of let OBL get away.

25,000 liters of anthrax - or was that 25,000 LP's by Anthrax?

9. Sounds like another effort to funnel money to
corporate crooks. Imagine "Kenny Boy" in charge of your health and/or savings plan.

11. "New era of ownership" = massive privitazation...
The GOP managed to let big business sneak into Medicare this year, so now, why not health insurance (even more so than at present) and employee savings?

Look for privatization of Social Security on the GOP's must-do list, too.

Privatization = windfall for big business, and death for the individual.

12. Health-care pop-up of recent vintage

And some of the text:

The great thing about liability reform is that there are no losers except the trial lawyers. Patients with legitimate suits will be able to recover unlimited economic damages to cover future medical expenses, lost wages, etc. Non-economic damages, like pain and suffering, would be capped at $250,000.
