Us poor dial up folks need a new feature from DU
called "cut off the pictures".

If the Bush economy was worth a crap, maybe I could afford DSL and
a new Mac. As it is, I'm still using the same ole' Mac I've had for
almost 6 years, and I can't afford DSL. These threads with 100 posts and
200 pictures drive me insane.

1. There is one in your profile options
It has been a life saver for my hard working dial-up. Make sure you turn off signature lines and avatars also.

I must be too old and too blind.

3. same here. when I use my mac, I have these turned off.
it just says "image" if someone posts one, and you can click on it, but I don't have to wait for avatars and sig. lines.

4. I feel your pain.
I was able to buy a new computer just recently. It replaces one that was purchased in 1996...Old and Slowwwwwwwwwwwww

Unfortunately, like you, I still cannot afford DSL or any other type of whippeedo speedy service. Hell, I can't even get my new computer to make the media player work right!

Is a MAC better in your opinion??

6. webtv is cheap
a hundred bucks gets a new one...tho an old tv will make you also spend fort y or so for an "rf modulator" too.

I am wary of any used electonics.. so try to buy new webtv.

webbys have limitations , but download of picts here is not slow. Or maybe i just dont know what fast is? LOL

7. Thanks everyone.
Macs are easier to use. I didn't get a computer until the winter of 1999......or was it the fall of 1998? Anyway, a friend that worked
with both PCs and Macs at a school recommended the new iMac. I didn't
have any computer guru friends, and I was an old 52-year-old neophyte.
I purchased the iMac (and another for business use later) haven't looked back. This one has never missed a beat in almost 6 years. It never crashes, and I learned how to run and maintain the thing without any
help other than a few calls to Apple.

As I said, I'm no computer expert and only use this one for email, internet surfing, faxing, and typing letters. Also, I like the Mac
family. They have various forums that are really helpful. Best of
all, Steve Jobs IS A DEMOCRAT AND HATES BUSH!!

5. and there are those of us w/o access to high speed
connections other than sattelite and that's outrageously priced, and a lousy connection to boot. i'm lucky if i can get 21000 bps on my painfully piss poor dial up.

but i love my mac.

12. Another thing to try
is using a less bulky browser. I'm not familiar with Mac software, but you might get a little more responsiveness by using Firefox. Look here: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/releases/#download . The speed of your connection is the main thing, but this is the Queen of lean and mean when it comes to web browsing. It lets you turn off images, disable popups and turn off ads for all or selected sites, all of which will reduce the load on your connection.

13. I'm using the latest Mozilla
and it stomps the shit out Internet Explorer. It and Opera are the fastest ones I've tried so far.

14. Isn't it great!
It is fast and it stops all those pop ups and unders better than IE ever could. I love the feature of the group of tabs bookmark.

15. Mozilla will spoil you for sure
On some sites the ole' Mac seems twice as fast, and those damn popups went "poof"!

16. Try Firefox
Use Thunderbird for email (it has everything I want and more - does newsgroups, too - and is very comfortable to use). (Gravity is a freeware newsgroup client - my fist choice.) It is wonderful how open source software is responsive to the real needs of users, instead of backroom deals. I'm using a W98-grade system and compared Internet Exploiter to Mozilla to Firefox, and the latter is noticably faster than the full Mozilla package, and both way faster than IE.
