Deadheart Dick Cheney Bumbles Through the Southwest
This deserves to be spread around...Deadheart Dick hits the campaign trail with his message of outreach, hoping to win over skeptics and...uh...

"Some would-be spectators hoping to attend Vice President Dick Cheney's rally in Rio Rancho this weekend walked out of a Republican campaign office miffed and ticketless Thursday after getting this news:
Unless you sign an endorsement for President George W. Bush, you're not getting any passes.
"I'm outraged at this. I'm being closed off by my own government. It's crazy," said East Mountains resident Pamela Random, who added that she is an unaffiliated voter.
John Wade of Albuquerque said he initially signed the endorsement but was having second thoughts before he even left the office. Wade, a Democrat, said he returned his tickets and demanded to get his endorsement form back.
"It's not right for me to have to sign an endorsement to hear (Cheney) speak," Wade said. "I'm still pissed. This just ain't right." "

Yeah, that's the mark of candidates the people love, rolling on their way to victory...then it was on to Arizona...

"President Bush's re-election campaign insisted on knowing the race of an Arizona Daily Star journalist assigned to photograph Vice President Dick Cheney.
The Star refused to provide the information.
Cheney is scheduled to appear at a rally this afternoon at the Pima County Fairgrounds.
"It was such an outrageous request, I was personally insulted," Hayt said later. "

Remember, Chimpy was standing right there grinning and nodding when Trent Lott said "We wouldn't have these problems if Strom Thurmond had been president"... And Cheney propped up apartheid in South Africa as long as he could....

1. I read earlier today...
On DU in fact, that psychologically making someone sign something like this makes them less likely to turn on you later.

But I really think this little fascist plan is going to backfire on them. How many independents and borderline-Republicans will be so offended that they switch their vote? I know if MY political candidate wanted me to sign an endorsement I'd say "Fuck you asshole" and start looking at other options.

6. It's a startling public admission of weakness...
You're admitting that you cannot reach out to any but the already decided....and as much as telling the people who DO come, "Well, we know you fell for it in advance."

2. I've been to two presidential rallies
Edited on Sat Jul-31-04 10:09 PM by RatTerrier
First one was when Jesse Jackson spoke at my college in '88, during the primary season. The second time was an event in the summer of '92, a huge public event on the streets of Downtown Minneapolis featuring Bill Clinton, Al Gore, their wives, Paul Wellstone, and just about every bigwig in the Minnesota DFL party.

And guess what? No pledges required. Come as you are, and don't bring any concealed weapons.

Bushco's true colors are showing.

7. Kerry drew more than 25,000 today...
He sure didn't pick through them one at a time to be sure they were loyal...nor did he fret that somebody who wasn't white might take his picture....

3. Arizona will be blue this year
I get the feeling that in Az Shrub and Co are only being supported by the radical yahoos. Moderate Republicans and those to the left of them will vote for Kerry. We have many vets out here who favor Kerry as well.

8. Making them sign an advance pledge
is as good as saying to each one, "You're a chump."

<snip>

"Two men who sought tickets said they were required to give name, driver's license number, address and other information. They were presented the pledge of endorsement when they arrived to pick up the tickets.

John Wade says he signed the pledge because he wanted the tickets but then changed his mind and returned the tickets in exchange for his pledge."

Required to give name, rank and serial number? Screw that....

13. Oy, that's worse than I imagined
I was thinking to myself, heck, I'd have signed some made up name. Lily Peeyu or something. That's REALLY a very fascist-sounding approach checking IDs (not to mention paranoid as all get out). Whew.

14. I'll bet evey five minutes somebody from the GOP says to Dick
You don't look so good.
You feel healthy?
How's your pulse?
Any dizziness, sweats, palpitations?
You really don't look so good.
You sure you're up to this?
Maybe you should just, I don't know, take it easy.
Now, you'll tell us if you don't feel well.
You okay? Just asking because we care.
Want to sit this one out?
You're not a young guy anymore.
You look sort of pale....

16. let's bookmark this absurdity for future fodder too ... here's a good one:
from the Arizona Star article link above:

<snip>
Organizer Christine Walton asked for Popat's race in telephone conversations with two other Star editors before she spoke to Hayt. They also refused to provide the information. Walton told Hayt that Popat's race was necessary to allow the Secret Service to distinguish her from someone else who might have the same name.
<snip>

RIGHT!!!!!!!! Because, after all, "Mamta Popat" is a name as common as say Jane Jones ... /sarcasm ... puhleeeezzeee!

19. Part of signing the endorsement is giving them the right to use
that endorsement in campaign ads. They sound like they are getting very desperate
