"The Bear Patrol must be working like a charm."
Whenever I hear these GOP comments about "we haven't been attacked, so we must be doing something right," I am reminded of a scene from The Simpsons (the one when the town wants to deport illegal immigrants). A bear comes down from the hills and vandalises Homer Simpson's lawn. Fearful of future bear attacks, the citizens demand a sprawling and powerful Bear Patrol. They get it--and when no bears return, Homer thinks that the bear patrol is "working like a charm."

Lisa quickly dismisses his logic as specious reasoning. "By your logic," she says as she picks up a stone from their lawn, "I could claim that this rock keeps tigers away." Homer wants to know how it works. "It doesn't," Lisa says. "It's just a stupid rock. But I don't see any tigers around, do you?"

What do you think?

1. Makes since to me

I get it and it works.

I would say that Kerry could use it but did he vote for the "stupid rock," Homeland Security?

If he did they will say you voted for the Rock, why did you vote for it?

2. I don't think that "Homeland" security is what it was supposed to be.
They also have botched this.

8. That's an ancient joke...
going back to my skooldaze, and probably my grandfather's.

But, it's true that you don't get any awards for things that don't happen.

Clinton was talking about this. He says his administration stopped over a dozen major plots against us, but he never expected to get any praise or recognition. It was just part of the job, and you just do it.

What bothers me about these guys is that Clinton and the other adult Presidents never had to get out and brag about the things they did but could never prove. Or the less obvious things that had far-ranging effects.

These people have absolutely no accomplishments to run on, so they are reduced to saying what "might" have happened.

Can they even point to any specific plots that they have foiled? Of course not.

9. Pop Culture Helps
Ancient, indeed. But creatign a parallel through a pop culture medium certainly makes the message clearer, I think.

10. Well, yeah...
if it takes the Simpson's to get the point across, at least the point got across.
