the 10 commandments, the virgin birth, and other fables
the story of adam and eve, and the garden of eden, is in fact, a fable. as are many other stories from biblical days. the bible is full of such stories as are all other religious epics. told in the language of the day, and the language of those who have translated it over the millenia. the story of god giving 10 rules of law for all men and women to live by is just another one of these fables, like jesus rising from the dead, the virgin birth, turning fish into loaves and reviving the dead. all fables, probably meant to convey morality to ancient peoples. there was never any giant voice from the clouds on a mountain, and a delivery of a large stone with laws burned into it by god's own hand. it is a fable. even most christians realize it. like noah and the ark, daniel in the lion's den, and jonah and the whale.

so we cannot as modern civilized people in the 21st century pretend that all of these fables are true. no god ever gave us 10 laws. the rest of the world, those who have never read the bible, have gotten along just fine without them. in fact, our having these 10 laws has made us no better off than any other religious sect or group. we all have the same problems, we are all born, and we all die. so we cannot base our system of laws on only 10 laws, based on a fable in an ancient, often misinterpreted book.

it is also a fable that this country's founders intended for the nation to be built around judeo/christian ethics and laws. utter bull. the 10 commndmnts. controversy is just another silly attempt to stir up the easily offended and sometimes violent religious fanatics of the born again persuasion, who won't be happy until we are all speaking in tongues and taking up serpents. faith is sometimes described as believing in the unknown, or unseen, or unbelievable. we don't need a nation who's laws are based on faith or fables. we need a secular government, uninfected by any particular religion with a political agenda.

moses never really parted the red sea with his staff, which never really turned into a snake, god never really turned lot's wife into a pillar of salt just for turning around for a look. and god never really handed down a stone tablet with 10, and only 10 rules for mankind. we need to rise above fables so we can grow as a species and a race and a people of peace and knowledge. we need to toss aside all beliefs in ancient fables and face the future without the constant irritant of angels, demons, devils, curses, and mythology written by frightened, uneducated people from thousands of years ago.

1. Um, this is your opinion.
There is such a thing as faith. This is flame-bait, by the way.

Incidentally, I'm not particularly religious, but I'm not so arrogant as to state flatly that my beliefs trump those of others.

Have a good evening...

5. yes, i expect to be snitched on and alerted for having an opinion
sacred cows will be killed, true believers will be shocked and offended, but i don't understand why. they shouldn't be offended at someone having a differing opinion, and stating it in a calm manner.
but i fully expect to have it locked or moved or whatever. hit and run atheism.

7. I'm locking this thread.
This is flame bait. I am getting tired of the religion wars on DU. If people wish to discuss religion, that is fine, but I think we need to be more sensitive. Words like "fables" or "fairy tales" don't add anything to the discussion, and only inflame.

8. Well said!
although it could be argued that this part:
>the constant irritant of angels, demons, devils, curses, and mythology written by frightened, uneducated people from thousands of years ago.

actually results from the efforts of educated elites to sell the masses some scary stories to get them to go to war, obey their betters (who were related to the gods), etc.

If only non-believers were as confident of their rights as believers, we might make some progress. For now, we can join the Freedom From Religion Foundation--"Protecting the constitutional principle of the separation of state and church"
