Janeane Garafalo on Faux.
Faux lie from some prick sitting with Greta Van Sustren....

"Campaign Operatives" say that Gore's "loss" was not about Florida, but about Tennessee.

The ONLY reason I have it on Faux is because Janeane Garafalo is about to come on.

1. And no more blondeness!
When I met her, I said the dyejob made her the anti-Ann Coulter.

In a perfect world it wouldn't matter what color she dyes her hair.

But in a sexist world, I admit, it will be taken as caving...I think this can be remedied, however, by looking at what she has to say. Nothing 'conformist' about it.

8. What a strange response...
Edited on Wed Jul-28-04 11:25 PM by thebigidea
I think these comments are more along the lines of "you look good in green" or something.

It goes without saying that what she's saying is completely on-target, she's terrific and only getting better at the media game.

A standup background really prepares you for dicing pundits - if you've spent a decade dealing with drunken hecklers, you can deal with the FOX crowd. Humor trumps humorless arrogance any day.

9. Are you talking about my response?
Because I thought I expressed something in complete agreement with you: It doesn't mater what she looks like, only what she says.

10. I've been up too long, I guess.
I took it to mean our comments about her color change as sexist or something.

12. I have been up too long as well!
No worries!

In case it came across unclear in my first post, what I meant too say is: YES, I think there is something to be said about actresses conforming to the sexist norm (whether it's fake-blonde or liposuction to make one skinny, or fake-ass blue contacts). BUT, I think there is a way to distinguish between those doing "it" for popular approval and those who just feel comfortable choosing to look how they feel. Do you know what I mean?

Janeane, imho, has NEVER put society's definitions of an "acceptable" or "pretty" woman over her ideals. It is her thinking self that makes an impact...not her physical self. And I get the impression she knows that.

I only hope we come to a place of such equality that a woman's appearance does not signify her ideals. I know I struggle with it EVERY DAY. Ex: If I wear this comfy snug top do I look like an empty-headed "ho-bag?" Maybe I should wear this unappealing bag-shirt, because I don't want to be mistaken for one of those 'don't i look good,; thank god you can't see my brain types.' But I don't like this bag-shirt...but I don't want to be taken as a woman who who only gets by on compliments on her looks...but I *hate* this bag-shirt. etc.

That was my only point: It's *hard* (in my experience) to balance being a thinking woman with what the media portrays as looking like a 'thinking woman' vs. 'idiot bimbo.'

14. How old are you?
Because, really, after a while you reach a point where you just don't give a damn. At least I did.

It helps to throw out your women's magazines and limit tv watching.

16. That's interesting

Because I haven't read ANY "women's" magazines in over 5 years. I'm 25, by the way. The only magazines I subscribe to are The Nation and Bitch Magazine.

I am one of the number one proponents you could find out there of throwing out the "celeb-addicted-so-called-women's-magazine-and-teevee-garbage." It doesn't matter what I KNOW to be fact about myself. I still have to face what PEOPLE out there think of me when they see me. And yes, not giving a damn is what I strive for...but I also don't want to be grouped by a sexist passerby (and there are SO many) into some "hot girl" (read: dumbass to most of them) dichotomy. So yea, it will be a great day when I don't have to second guess what I wear and hope it doesn't send the wrong message about my intellect.

To add emphasis to message, I'll also say that there are thousands of girls out there who DO read that shit that's peddled as women's mags and who ARE affected by it much more than I will ever experience. My sister is one of them. Thinking her nose has to be "fixed" to be popular. I hope you understand why my acknowledging the sexism in mainstream society (instead of ignoring it...like I am not affected by it as badly, so maybe it might go away? wtf?) is important to me as a woman.

jeez.

15. Personally, I'd wear the snug top and wear a pair of thick, fake glasses.
Joke! Joke! Kidding! Stop hitting me!

Janeane makes some great points on these sorts of issues, and the stories about horrible studio executives whining about her "doublechin" & weight are alternately horrifying and enlightening.

Me, I could never understand that movie she was in with Uma Thurman wherein apparently she was the "ugly duckling."

Ugly? The hell?

Hollywood. Geez. No wonder I moved.

17. That movie was weird because
Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 01:05 AM by Kipepeo
I think she probably justified it to herself by reading the script and saying the "so-called-plain-jane" gets the boy.

But still, it was a bad movie, save the whole: "My name is Bitch too! Are you getting my mail?" part. ;)

The one I was most uninterested in of hers was "Matchmaker" but again, every "mainstream star" does shit like that to make the dough to keep on keepin' on...at least she didn't use that money to fund a string of horrible pics like some have. She went into political punditry instead and for that I am SO FUCKING GRATEFUL! :)

18. Indeed! And great timing, too...
Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 01:29 AM by thebigidea
I would imagine that she would've had a hard time spending months doing supporting roles in romantic comedies without bursting into uncontrollable rants about Dick Cheney this year...

Of course, my favorite flick of hers was the one she did a salty voice for on some idiot's website:

http://www.terminalproduct.com/freedomfucked.rm

The fact that its my website is of course, purely coincidental.

2. Well...
it's true if he had won his home state we wouldn't have been all worked up over Florida. Sure Florida was stolen, but the point they made was valid, though sort of a jab at Gore.

At the time I was angry that he didn't carry his home state, I was saying it even back then.

Gore won TN or not.

End of story.

7. If every vote was counted...
Gore would have won.

And that leaves out the thousands of disenfranchised voters and the butterfly ballot and the police blockades in black neighborhoods and everything else.
