Garrison Keillor on C-span Now
Edited on Tue Jul-27-04 01:00 PM by theivoryqueen
Love his voice! Might be best not to look too closely, tho... He had a great line about Liberals being for the kind of america where when a person falls down in the street, others will help the person get back up. (Paraphrased)

1. Thanks
I missed him this morning. He does have a great voice.
He's also a good thinking leader of the cause.

3. I invite and ask that you pay attention to Keillor sometime this week.
He has written a new book about being a Democrat. He has written an article in the www.startribune.com (Minneapolis Star Tribune) that is really moving (about a week ago). His words on C-Span this morning and his answers to questions are a keeper. I think he says everything I feel about being American and Democrat (if I weren't an Independent). If you want ammunition and insight into the issues of why we should take back our country or what we're losing - you'll get your inspiration here. This is a side of Keillor that you haven't seen before. I urge you to add his book to your reading list.

He is an original thinker with great delivery.

If you haven't read his column from a couple of years ago about Norm Coleman - look that one up also.

5. Sent this to my republican brother:
I sent the Keillor piece you mention to my republican brother. His response: "That was the most pathetic thing I've read in a long time. Keillor should stick to his home-spun humor."

So much for intelligent political discourse.

6. appearance ought not count
we are essentially pure mind. Kindness is the measure, not appearance.

we must strive not to judge others on appearance.

I feel sorry that so many gals are forced to worry about appearance. Us guys are to blame for that. The world sure has a lot of progress to make! First, food and shelter for six billion, then on to getting rid of judging any by appearance. Lots to get done!

7. Your brother's reaction seems so typical. I get a shiver from the
coldness of Republicans and some/most Libertarians. If there is a division in this country it was spawned from the coldness issue. The right wing and libertarians allowed me to learn about myself - I found out I am the bleeding heart type.

When I was a child and was taught that we looked after each other, especially in the U.S. - that cared in a family, neighborly, or govermental way made us superior, I felt good and something resonated in me that had to do with intuitive knowledge that I was learning the truth about our purpose and responsibility. It was a soul thing. I remember all the hoopla about our generosity after WWII. (Not with our Japanese descended, our Blacks, our Native Americans and earlier, our European ancestors.....but, we were always taught that our representatives, our unions, our organizations, our churches, our schools were our source for progress, along with knowledge of our disgraces).

When did we separate? Who announced the separation?

8. Higher class-
Well put. Cold is right. My brother can be the most generous man with his family. He has gone out of his way to help me many times. He has also kicked me out of his house because his anger got the best of him.
He has a lot of rage built up in him due to, I think, some things that happened to him in his youth.

But when it comes to taking a look at making sure society at large is doing well, he cuts off the generosity. I remember him saying one time during one of our political "discussions" about health care: "Why should my hard-earned money provide some east side black kid's CAT scan?" He actually said that. He is like O'Liely in that when I am making a strong case he tells me to shut up. He knows, but he also likes his BMW, buying his kids thousands of dollars in x-mas gifts etc.

I, too, once felt that I was part of a system that truely cared about how everyone was doing, and because there were so many more people doing o.k. I felt safe. And even though I grew up comfortably enough I always felt that if things turned sour for me I would still make it through with flying colors.

So now my brother lives in a community of road-raging republicans whom he can not stand. He has made his bed.
