The entrance music for President Clinton tonight was, of course, Fleetwood Mac's hit "Don't Stop", a song he put to good use 12 years ago on his journey to the White House. Indeed, when the chorus came ringing loud and clear from the TV coverage, it took me back to those halcyon days where I found the first political campaign that energized and engaged me (it was my first voting opportunity).
I had another fleeting thought back to the past...I remembered the evening of November 7, 2000 and the immediate sense of depression and loss I felt headed to bed after hearing George W. Bush declared the winner. Although it took the next two months to sort it out, I had a unyielding sense of dread and anxiety about the coming four years and what kind of country we'd have by the time of the next election.
Well, just about all my fears were realized since that night. But tonight, for the first time in a very long stretch, I'm getting that energy and optimism from '92 back. It's been a slowly growing feeling, boosted immensely by Howard Dean's inspiring campaign and, now, firmly rooted in the Kerry-Edwards ticket. Hearing the lions of our party hold the national stage rapt tonight with one amazing speech after another has got me up again. For all our divisions, for all our differences, for all our petty quarrels...it was never truer to say that what unites us trumps whatever divides us.
So, as the song goes: we don't stop thinking about tomorrow it'll be here, better than before yesterday will be gone, yesterday will be gone!
I am damn proud to be a liberal Democrat. I'll say it again....DAMN PROUD!
