Why would Kerry back off from e-voting issue, if this is true?
I realize it could be more divisiveness by the media, but this article caught my eye. Not push it because it might keep voters away? That is a new one.

http://www.computerworld.com/governmenttopics/government/story/0,10801,94751,00.html

SNIP..."However, speaking on condition of anonymity, an IT industry source who met last week with members of Sen. John Kerry's staff said the Kerry campaign is considering a move to pull back from the position taken by the Democratic National Committee and Howard Dean's Democracy for America organization. Dean and the DNC have endorsed the voter-verifiable paper ballot requirement for e-voting systems -- something that only the state of Nevada has planned for November. According to the official, the Kerry campaign is considering support for verification of the final vote tally through some form of encryption.

For many Democrats, however, the issue boils down to a Republican-controlled Congress that has refused to force voting-system vendors to open their software to inspection and verification.

"The Republicans have an interest in not doing anything about electronic voting security," said Townsend.

But some analysts, along with liberal organizations, said that although security of the systems and the integrity of the software used are real concerns, the rhetoric surrounding the debate could actually hurt voter turnout. And that could backfire on the Democrats."

1. I'm giving Kerry the benefit of the doubt and assuming
he is sticking with a paper trail. But if he gives it up, dang it's like Gore asking to only recount ballots in _some_ counties all over again. :(

Knowing the media... and unnamed sources... I'll wait for his official position.

Won't stop me from mailing the campaign about it though! Their knowing our opinions can only help.

4. Your point is valid...
May I add to that?

I think that Kerry is convinced the results would be questioned when he wins if he spends the next few weeks complaining that the boxes are rigged.

It would be typical RW hypocrisy but they are the masters.

I can envisage Delay getting in front of the Mic and listing every questionable result ever on voting machines if Kerry wins.

6. Bear in mind the source is twice removed
Edited on Sun Jul-25-04 12:06 AM by jpgray
"IT source speaking anonymously says that Kerry staffers say that Kerry will..." is not the most solid source in the world.

But unfortunately Kerry has not been at the forefront of the e-voting problems, nor have the Democrats at large--so this is not wildly out of character. I always try to write in or call when I hear about this, so I will be sure to this time.

7. It's just another anti Kerry slam
Trying to be covered up. But as the old saying goes, if it looks like... & smells like... it probably is.

11. Not on my part. I am not slamming. Read my post.
Anyone who was the nominee would get questioned on things. Please stop jumping when someone posts a legit question. I worded it carefully.

8. Kerry has a legal team
ready to monitor the election, before, during and after.

Quote:
"But Kerry's campaign appears to be doing the most to apply lessons from the Florida recount and is adopting the more fiercely partisan posture in the early going. Its plans include setting up teams of specially trained lawyers spokesmen and political experts to swoop into any state where a recount could be needed."

12. I have been admonishing people for months re PAPER BALLOTS
Edited on Sun Jul-25-04 01:34 AM by God_bush_n_cheney
Last week I posted documents obtained from Diebold...It is clear there are many parties moving to encryption. Or "paper trails". Be careful what you ask for...you just might get it.

Paper Ballots...not paper trails!

Paper trail = Vote Here...Read Jim Adlers own words to Linda Lamone.

http://www.blackboxvoting.org/Vote%20Here%20Docs.PDF

In this document a hand written note and e-mail...Avi Rubin is described as being a "convert/supporter"

http://www.blackboxvoting.org/Avi.PDF

David Jefferson who is on the VSPP board in California...on board with encryption. He is a "good friend" of Jim Adler. Now watch Diebold jump on board with VoteHere to secure your vote. It is a ruse!
