Why Will Conservatives Vote Dem in 2004?

My wife and I were discussing the conservatives she knows at work who are finally over Bush. Her analysis is that there are some "social" issues (stem-cell research, for example) that are bugging the conservatives enough to get them to jump *'s ship. What do you think is going to bring them onboard?

1. One of the same things that brought down the Elder Bush.

The economy. When people have no, or little income, it affects them and their families directly. This is why the Dems need to hammer on Bushco and keep hammering until the nails are deep and permanent. There should be no let up unless bushco have a REAL plan to get good paying jobs and keep them here in America. We should be a leader in the world, not a job exporter and if there are higher paying jobs, then that will make this a stronger country. OK OK I'll get off my soapbox now.

3. They'll become "Liberals Like Christ"

We are showing them in order to follow Christ, they need to stop following "Conservatives like Paul" and learn to be "Liberals Like Christ". We would have a lot more success and SOONER, if more Liberals were helping us get the word around.

5. Conservatives may become unhappy with any republican

but they will never vote for a Democrat. It would be the equivilent of a DUer voting for Bush because he was unhappy Leiberman got the Democratic nomination. I don't beleive your wife's co-workers are really conservative.

I'm not sure how to define it, either. But, for example, the one who's ticked off about his stand on stem-cell research voted for him in 2000. And, apparently, also cast a vote for Dole. It's personal for her; her brother has a disease she's become convinced could be cured through that kind of research.

She may be an anomaly, however.

I could see many rational conservatives voting for Dean because he makes rational pragmatic arguments rather than emotional ones.

This is a BIG reason he appeals to me.

Oh yes! Democrats should transform their whole message and ideology so that maybe 2% of white conservatives will think about maybe considering voting for them. Sounds like a winning formula to me!

...not for social issues because Bush is socially reactionary (he need not do anything but cite his fundie record), not for economic issues because they think that they're doing just fine, and not for foreign policy because "we're at war."

myself a small "c" conservative, i can tell you that democrats that stand for small, effective government are more "conservative" than people than the people-fuckers in the WH.

Wesley clark could woo conservatives to a dem ticket. Also, knowing its a hot button, but still..... the drugs war is not "conservative".
A conservative only spends money where it gets results... and the drugs war is full of one thing... the lack of results.

A winning democratic ticket can rip off the reagan-80 voters who were sold a lot of lies about conservativism, and only now are coming round to seeing the light.
