It should be about all of the above. However, the sad truth is that this election is about which candidate is most effective at political assassination. The candidate that can most effectively tear down the other with negative ads and convince the voting public that the other is a flip-flopper or a "liar" will win the election. People will vote on what they perceive as "values" rather than on the war or the economy.
But, it must be so. Whenever one candidate or the other decides to personally attack the motives or "values" of the other candidate, it has become a personal campaign, rather than one about issues. Unfortunately, Mr Bush and the Repubs dare not make the campaign about issues, so it has to be about Mr Kerry or Mr Edwards. They would rather depend on their well-organized propaganda network than to rely on their record of non-achievement.
It is unfortunate that the Democrats are unable to run solely on the job that Mr Bush has failed so miserably. But the Repubs will not permit that. This election will be a war in the trenches - hand to hand combat. There will be little discussion of the important issues as the election draws nearer. It will mostly be attacking or defending oneself from the lies and personal attacks of the right-wing hate machine.
