The voters guide for the North Carolina elections this coming Tuesday came out today. It had the usual, listing each candidates personal info, education, occupation, etc. Under the listing of political hero and favorite movie made for very interesting reading. Most repugnantcans listed for their hero: Ronald Reagan (far and away most common choice), Thomas Jefferson, Colin Powell (listed by a black repugnantcan), Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Dr. Condoleezza Rice (another black repugnantcan), Jesse Helms, and last if not least, G.W. Bush. Repugnantcan movie choices ran under a similar theme: The Passion of the Christ, Gone with the Wind, Top Gun, Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, lots for Braveheart, The Patriot, Gladiator, the Ten Commandments, and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
The Democratic nominees choices included: The Sound of Music, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Governor Easley),Borrowed Hearts, Happy Gilmore, The Preacher's Wife, Steel Magnolias, Cool Hand Luke,Rear Window, The Matrix, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Casablanca, The Wizard of Oz, the Color Purple, It's a Wonderful Life, To Kill a Mockingbird, Something's Got to Give, O Brother, Where art Thou (Quaker), Shawshank Redemption, Willow, Chariots of Fire, etc. I may be reading too much into it, but the democratic choices seem to have more whimsy, optimism, more non-mainstream movies. The repugnantcan movie choices seem violent. I guess that is how they see the world. Don't get me wrong, I liked some of their movie choices, tho none were my favorites. Many of the democrats had listed some of my favorites (what, no one listed Jason and the Argonauts?). At first I thought listing someone's favorite movie was frivolous, but now am thinking it allows a peek into someone's psyche. And these repugnantcans scare me.
