Got in a fight with my hubby while watching the Daily Show. The part about the talking points and the media. He said "You don't think the Democrats have talking points?"
Partly the fight was because I said I felt that there was a chance of Democracy just going down the tubes, and that this country was slipping into fascism. Then he dared to say I read too much DU!
I told him, yes I have become what most Americans aren't in this country, acutally aware of what is really going on in our government.
I told him I never would have believed a year ago I would feel this way, and feel that our country could slip into just dire straights. I never would have believed I would suspect that at the very least some in power simply allowed the attacks of 9/11 to happen.
And I said I understand how it happens-because I was one of those poeple. I was one of those people that thought it was okay to lose a few liberties. Because I was scared. Because I once, (20 years ago) worked in the World Trade Center. Because I had a new baby and more than anything I wanted to keep my long waited for late in life child alive. I was duped into believing that Iraq was a threat to me. That weapons and bombs and the rest could happen.
And this leads me to my conclusion, we may have talking points but for the most point, they aren't just slime and attack and inneundo. They are the truth.
When all we are presented with is lies/propaganda/fear, you know why things like the third Reich happened. When you allow those that lie and cheat and thug their way to power, and no one stops them, no one dissents and stands up who is actually in places of power, it can happen. Slowly and surely.
I don't feel so smug that it could never happen here. And I know why. I was one of those people, for a brief time. So I don't feel that "it could never happen here", that my husband does.
